its called using a disk (get some jas one, burn it as its an iso), then install it to a firewire/usb disk

How do I install to a firewire disk? I can't use my (and I don't have another) mac. My mac doesn't have any optical drive. I do not wish to buy an external DVD drive.

Effectively, I wil have to boot from my external drive on my mac using Windows to mount the bootable disk onto it. Possible?

Will this work? I convert the dmg. to iso. Then I copy all the files from the iso to my GUID partitioned external drive and boot from it.

Ive almost got it to work. I had a dmg and nothing would convert them- always got a corrupt error. Then I tried power ISO and converted to ISO. Then put in the contents into my firewire drive. When I booted it said something "EFI" I selected it and now I have the grey screen with the apple and it shows it's loading. It's been about 15 mins. Does it take that long or have I done something wrong?

Ok. I used transmac to restore the iso image and i;m on the install page :) Now the problem is, it's not giving me any drive to install to. When I buy a new drive, will I need to format it or will the installation format it for me like Windows XP?

yes, the installer will do it for you. if you have the time you could make two parition on the drive you put the installer disc onto. then you could just install leopard onto the other parition... that is what i have done.

I already have 2 partitions but installer doesn't give me the option for it. Perhaps I will try will another one.

Also, when I buy a new 2.5 disk to replace my dead drive, will I need to format it before hand?

Y'know, its posts like this that make me just wanna say... Maybe its not such a good idea for you to be messin' around installing beta OS' if you require such assistance. ;)

Ok done. I never realized I could run disk utility before installation :D . I've been a windows user until I switched 18 months ago and this is the first time I've needed to reinstall after a dead hard disk. i must say that installation is much much easier and prettier than windows. :P

For some reason Tiger felt more responsive to me though. I have 1.5gig ram on a CD macbook. I would never have installed a beta if my hard disk did not die on me.

Now another newbie question. When the final version comes out, will this auto update or will i need another?

Congrats on the switch, I was just pokin' a little fun at ya. We were all newbies at one time. ;)

Unfortunately you will not be able to update to the final release from any beta versions. It will either require an "Archive and Install" or a "clean install" (recommended).

lol some real smart*** here. Why post if your not going to answer? EVERYONE started somewhere so just because when you started out NOONE helped you, maybe you can be different and HELP others that need it. So put the beta on a drive by its self and go nuts trying to get it to work. This is a very nice site but not many people want to help. If you search a little you'll find some IRC where they LOVE to help..
