Hi All,

First off,

Its an Apple iBook A1005

It has a G3 600 Mhz Processor

It has 128 MB of Ram

It has a basic CD reader drive

It has an Airport Card installed

Yes it is a pretty low end older Apple iBook, but for 150 dollars with free shipping, I don't think I could have got a better deal. And yes battery is good and ac adapter is included.

Now to the question.

As far as my understanding goes, i can only update the notebook to the newest version of 10.2 Jaguar via Apple updates.

So I must have a copy of either 10.3 Panther or 10.4 Tiger to update. Well since it only has a basic CD drive, could I install OS X via image from say my windows desktop?

And...

If I, let's say, download and install a not so legit version of OS X 10.4 Tiger from a, I don't know, torrent site thingy mabobber. Would I still be able to install Apple Updates via Apple Update, i just made myself laugh, man I am tired, without it breaking my system?

Thanks in Advance,

Cody

And yes I do know that this thread is in the wrong forum and subforum, but I am an OSx86er at heart and always will be. I am giving this laptop to my mom, her first ever computer. Wanted it to be simple for her.

Keep on macKIN'

For your understanding. Each X.x version was updateable to the latest X.x.y version. There never was a way of upgrading via softwarupdate

As far as I know, you should be able to install 10.4 to your iBook with 10.4 PPC generic installation CDs. If illegaly downloaded or not makes no difference in terms of softwareupdate

If you are planning to install Leopard on that iBook, you might run into trouble, as 800 MHz are the requested minimum for Leo.

You cannot install onto your iBook with an image, as the installation CD/DVD has to be booted natively. What you can do is plug the iBook via firewire to another PPC Mac with a DVD-Drive and run the iBook in target disk mode (hold down t when you hear the chime after tuning the power on). The Mac with the DVD-Drive can then Use the iBooks harddrive as destination for the installation but also has to be booted with the DVD.

There is a CD version of Tiger on emule.
