sixsixtysix
So I managed to get my new system all up and running over the last week, BadAxe2 mobo, Core 2 Duo Q6700, 4GB of ram, Geforce 7900GS. Everything works great, no crashes, very fast. But over the last week while installing all my software, somewhere along the way, the system stopped properly displaying the correct CPU speed. I know it was right when I installed JAS 10.4.8 and then the 10.4.9 update and finally the 10.4.10 update. I benchmarked the fresh 10.4.10 system and took screen shots for a buddy and it showed everything as normal Quad Core 2 Duo @ 2.66Ghz in the "About this Mac" window, the System Profiler and even in the CPU usage menu from Menu Meters. Now I just noticed, it is showing Core 2 Duo @ 4GHZ in the "About this Mac" window, it is showing Core 2 Duo with 4 cores at 4GHz in the System Profiler and Menu Meters is displaying 4 Intel 80486 @ 4.0GHZ.What is going on? I havn't touched the system, only installed all my software and repaired permissions since the initial system install.Any Ideas? I know its only cosmetic but I would like to try to figure out whats causing it. :censored2: Actually I may have already figured out the point where it happened. I had to update the AppleSMBIOS.kext file in order for After Effects to run, I am willing to bet that is what did it. If any knows of a fix, I am all ears:) I believe the AppleSMBIOS.kext was 1.0.6 from Paulicat. sixsixtysix
Its not over clocked, the bios is displaying the correct CPU info and even XP in Parallels displays the correct CPU and speed, its definitely something in OS X. I found a few other threads about the AppleSMBIOS.kext causing the same problem, but now I am trying to find which is the best AppleSMBIOS.kext file in order to run AE CS3 as well as CS3 Design Premium Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/61915-core-2-duo-showing-up-as-4ghz/#findComment-438898 Share on other sites

BJMoose
Yes this often occurs when changing the appleSMBIOS which is part of your loginwindow. As you said, it is cosmetic and can be corrected by editing two files: localizable.strings and aboutthismac.strings. I'm not at my hack right now, but do a search for these to items. I believe aqua-mac has a how-to that you can google for. sixsixtysix
Ok, so it is definitely AppleSMBIOS that is the culprit. Last night I installed the latest one from Netkas and the CPU reading went back to displaying correctly and all the CS3 apps ran, including After Effects, but Final Cut Studio 2 crashes on launch. So back to the one I had before in which CS3 and FCPS2 run, but the CPU is displayed wrong. Guess I am going to have to deal with it unless someone knows of a SMBIOS that works with all of the above. Also, just wanted to say these forums rock, I was able to go from experienced Mac user to Hackintosh builder and user in a weekend. With the info I found here I was able to build a machine that keeps pace with the Mac Pro for about $750 Keep up all the good work! BJMoose
See my post above...a simple textedit in those two files will solve all your problems.
