A few considerations on OsX after a couple weeks of use :

Being myself a big oppositor of the whole "think different" apple style i must say i'm very surprised about my first appproach to OsXx86

I'm into compstech since the early '90's , i'm a net eng. ,sys admin and webapps developer, used to *nix and win systems i must say i got a really good feeling 'bout this Os.. the bsd susbsystem is quite stable and well proven and the Aqua user interface is really well done.. the scripting possibilities of the actions/folders are really impressive and x86arch support makes osX a possibile choice for Linux/Win programmers as we already well know Gcc and related tools and crosscompile to win/linux and from linux isnt so difficult, sharing the same arch. The same considerations apply to Web-apps developers that can easily interact with *nix servers or locally use the same worldwide leader and well known apps like apache/mysql/php with the ability to use mainstream cvs dev sources ( with little adjustements)without the usual delays occurring on ppc branches synchro.

In my opinion OsX x86 support/transition will change the whole Os market, as a big part of the linux community could "jump on it" being OsX the concretisation of an old utopia : a x86 Os with a rocksolid *nix base, a fast OGL enabled window manager system, a easy and good looking user interface, powerful scripting capabilities and common opensource development tools enriched by a nice IDE (Xcode).

If Apple will ever decide to sell OsX also without the pc hardware ( they still could adopt a pci card for TPM/copy protection purpose ) there will be a quake in the mainstream Os market ...definitely....

just my 2 cents..

With Jobs at the helm, I really doubt that Apple will go OS only. They really do

view themselves as a hardware company first.

IE: Going ape{censored} with iPod.

I mean, as a Linux user myself, I sincerely hope that they go generic with OSX.

But looking at Apples past with Jobs running it you can see when he sued the hell

out of the "Clones". Apple = Hardware first.

There is another thread somewhere here with people wondering the impossible (ie, OS X for 'normal' PCs). So, I won't add too much to this one.

Pretty much agree on your other points, though. :)

Go here if you want to continue the 'why apple should release OS X for everyone' discussion:
