What kind of keyboard are you using ? On every keyboard I've used, "@" is just a shifted "2".

Reread your subject. The "3rd" symbol would normally be shift+option+key.

On my USA system 1234567890 becomes !@#$%^&*() when shifted, and ?€‹›??‡°·‚ when option-shifted.

If I set my language to German, the "@" key becomes option-"l" (lower case "L"). Suspect your results will be similar...."@" will be option-something, you may just have to hunt for which key "something" is. I just use textedit to do a printout of which key is which.

I'm using the UK keyboard where the @ symbol is above the letter 2, but when i press shift+2 i get a quote " mark. I have my locale settings set to UK British but i still get the problem. My @ symbol is actually above the single quote ' which is where i believe US keyboard layouts have it.

I'm trying to help here, but maybe this is beyond me, since I've only seen & used keyboards intended for the USA market.

I THINK that there are three basic issues:

1) What symbols are PRINTED on any given keyboard

2) What electrical SIGNALS are sent when any given key combo is pressed

3) How the system software INTERPETS said SIGNALS

1) is fixed, and 2) is set in hardware & firmware for any given keyboard.

3) Can be adjusted to some degree in the International & Keyboard/Mouse preference panes.

Attachment shows what I get in TextEdit on my USA Logitech keyboard with the just the top row of keys, when normal, shifted, optioned, and option-shifted. What this says to me is that any particular symbol is very probably available in OSx86 (or OSX in general), but you may have to hunt for it, and what you get will differ depending on what language you specify in the International preference pane.

The best you can do to find out where the keys are is following: config panel -> internationalisation -> keyboard

here you have three checks on the top of the box: japanese something, keyboardlayout and charactertable

check keyboardlayout and chartable, now you have in the systray a flag from you keyboardlayout. with the overview you can try out what happens if you press the different keys like option and so on. and at lest you can select a character with the chartable

this description may not be exact, beacause i have it german and translated it.

All right, I figured it was slightly better to bump an old thread related to what I was asking than creating a new thread, so that's what I'll do.

My keyboard layout doesn't match any of the options available in the International control panel. I have a Japanese (JIS) keyboard, where @ is its own key, quotes shift-2, apostrophes shift-7, and ; and : are separate keys. It also has its own input method keys (switching into and out of Japanese mode is done by pushing a key next to Esc that currently produces a `). Mac OS X refuses to recognize my keyboard as such, and even when set to Japanese, it insists that my keyboard is a US layout, only offering Japanese input and not the keyboard layout. Can anyone help me out here?

What brand is your keyboard ? Some manufacturers offer/post OSX drivers to adapt their particular keyboard's hardware & firmware to OSX.

In my experience with US keyboards, virtually every keyboard will work to some degree BUT any special features....such as your keyboard has....require a driver from the manufacturer to full work.

I personally like the Logitech keyboards (wired & wireless). They were a little slow with drivers to fully support Intel Macs (& Hacks), but are up to speed now for US keyboards.

I don't know what they offer in Japanese keyboards.

Well, it's a laptop, so it's built-in (if it makes a difference, the manufacturer is Panasonic). I'm not sure what to do, really- did I need to start the installation in Japanese before it would recognize my keyboard as Japanese, do I need to download a custom keyboard layout, or ...?

I think the short answer is that to get full OSX support, you'll need to use an external keyboard. I'm sure that the built-in OSX support for Japanese keyboards is pretty much limited to Apple products.

There are some general purpose keyboard utilities listed at versiontracker.com, but I suspect that none of them will help you with this problem.

G :(

It's the one found in the "Keyboard Layouts" folder and I need it because it has the Japanese keyboard layout file (which the x86 install lacks for some reason).

Japanese_Bundle.sitx

This is the Japanese.bundle from the Keyboard layout folder in 10.4.3.

Not sure if it will help ??

G :P

...it didn't. My problem was solved, though- I poked around and discovered someone else's keyboard layout file, called "USB JIS". It was originally made for some versions of Mac OS X where a bug made Japanese USB keyboards show up as American. It works perfectly for me, and http://www.geocities.jp/mac_scripter/ is the link if anyone else wants it.

And with that, the only problem left to tackle is wireless...
