    Samsung NC10 UK revision

I have a question concerning the wireless. I have an old Powerbook (Aluminum 15-inch, 3-odd years old) that I no longer use. Can I pull the Airport card out of that and use it? Or should I just get the Dell? (and because the search function doesn't seem to turn up results, is there a specific Windows driver I'd need to pick out from the Dell site?)

    Realtek Ethernet problems

The site's not working for me. Any alternatives?

    Realtek Ethernet problems

My onboard Ethernet NIC (Realtek RTL8139/810x) used to work perfectly with a 10.4.8 JaS install. Then I had to wipe my drive and I chose to reinstall with XxX 10.4.11 instead for the EFI. Now my Ethernet doesn't work. I can see the driver try to load, and as the boot messages scroll by in verbose mode I can catch something about a "link/load error" for the Ethernet driver. Can anyone help out?
  4. My laptop's a Panasonic T5 with 512MB RAM, 60GB HDD and 1.2GHz Core Solo. I first installed with JaS 10.4.8 where I had the same problem as described in the OP. Then I used the koolkal updater to update my system to 10.4.10. Sleep worked normally then, except for a little quirk- I had to use the power switch to put it in sleep but it woke when I opened the lid. Then I had problems and reinstalled with XxX 10.4.11 with vanilla kernel and EFI. Now it'll go to sleep, but it won't even respond anymore. I have to pull out the battery to reboot it. Any help here?

You need to use the chain0 method (although I think it's different for Leopard- tboot, it was?).

The only time I have had this happen was when I was trying to do a reinstallation- I had to reformat the drive and install.

    No DVD no boot

My problem's similar to this. I can't boot into Mac OS without the DVD. However, my problem may be a little different. I use the Windows XP bootloader and chain0. It boots into Windows just fine, but when I try to boot into Mac I get a "chain booting error". With the DVD, I let the installation prompt time out and it boots from my hard drive just fine. Any idea what's wrong?

    Boot error

I guess so. Well, time to move up to Leopard. Cautionary note- I think I know what's going on now. Turns out it's a MacDrive problem- I tried moving some files from my Windows partition into my Mac partition and the two files (and a bunch of folders, including System and Users) disappeared completely. The last thing I did before this happened was that I downloaded a Mac game directly into the root of my Mac partition through Firefox.

    Boot error

When my Mac starts up, it freezes during the boot process. When starting in verbose, I get a "Warning: completing zero-block transter" flashing down my screen multiple times. When using safe mode, it tells me that both mach and mach.sym are smaller than they should be (mach is 0 blocks, mach.sym is 48 blocks), then tells me that the drive could not be repaired, then shuts down. What's going on?

On the other hand, certain countries do not treat the EULA as absolute, especially if it takes away the customer's rights to use it as he/she pleases. For the US, though, someone really should test that "Apple-labeled" part of the EULA- will those Apple stickers that seem to (used to?) come with OS X be all right?

I still don't see how any law could make installing an OS that is not native to your computer illegal. If such a law exists I am glad that sich a law does not exist where I live, where an Apple reseller is completely free to say "Oh, that's a normal PC- here's what you'll have to do to use Leopard on it" and help out along the process (being the country with the largest population in the world helps a little- Apple wants more customers and the best way to do that is to hook them on the experience first). I also don't see what the moral wrong is. I'ver certainly not stolen anything from Apple.

    LCD Brightness

It won't make a huge difference, but it will help. I made a dark color profile for my laptop LCD and it adds about 1/2 hour-45min to my battery life. I hope someone will start working on a better solution to this.

AppleHDA Solution - Work in progress

Mine's a Sigmatel 9200. Everything but mic input works at first, but the headphone jack stops working if I put my laptop to sleep and then wake it up. Any help?

Well, I'm using mine as a substitute for a real Mac, because I had a real Mac (Powerbook 15inch) before and found it to be way too fragile.

I suppose you're right on the "morally" bit, but I'm happy to say that I currently live in a country where it's legal (even the Apple resellers get in on the action- I've heard every so often "So you like Mac OS but that Macbook's too expensive? Here, this version's made for normal computers...").
