Well, a Mac uses an Apple Brand motherboard as well as use Mac OS X. However, the motherboards use Intel Chipsets and Processors.

If you got an Apple Motherboard and hook it up with similar specs as a Mac, it should work as a Mac. The HDDs, Processors, Power Supplies, etc. are all made by other manufacturers.

This is what I believe, there may be something more to it that I don't know.

It depends on what type of Mac MoBo you're talking about... If you're talking about say a G4 for example, you can do it, but you'll have to mod your case and power supply. You would also need an Apple processor and heatsink. If you're talking about an Intel based MoBo, I would think it to be possible. I haven't found the courage to disassemble my MacBook, but I can tell you it's possible to put together a G4. There's a lot of information available on how to mod the power supplies and cases to make older Apple hardware work in beige boxes.

A word of advice though: it's probably going to cost you quite a bit for an Apple MoBo (Intel Based). I would say you're looking at spending about 300 US. And even if you buy an Apple MoBo, you may still be looking at having to mod the power supply and what-not.
