I just bought a new SATA hard disk. I installed it and started to format it with windows. When it got to 3% I noticed that I accidentally chose the long format. So I aborted the format. I attempted to format again, this time as a "Quick Format". Windows said it could not write to the disk. So I ran a linux live cd and did a fdisk and created a new NTFS partition. When I tried to write, Linux said it could not write to the disk. Is my disk a brick or is there some way to fix it?

I have to buy it to use it. No thanks but I think I will just go back to bestbuy and return my drive.

Are you kidding me. Thats more than the drive costs.

P.S.:I DO NOT want to recover data. This hard drive is less than a day old. I want to make it work so I don't have to bring it back to bestbuy.

You should be able to find a copy of DOS fdisk, either on an old windows install floppy or on the internet. Create a bootable floppy with fdisk on it. Erase extended partitions, and primary partitions. Now you can either leave your drive with unallocated space and use your windows cd to create an NTFS primary partition or you can create a fat32 primary partition with fdisk and go from there. Very rarely does doing what you did render the hard drive as useless. Possible, but not likely.
