Millsy
Ok, so I use my Mac Pro as my alarm clock (thankfully not my *ONLY* alarm clock) and have it start playing music using iCal. Works great. Unless there is a new update for iTunes.... in which case, it just sits there and says THERE IS A UPDATE! and does nothing else... Do I have to disable auto updates for iTunes, or is there a way to get it to play even if there is a new update for it? Not a 100% sure if this is what you are saying, but are you saying that when ical starts or changes to itunes the upgrade dialog is open asking to upgrade and then your song/playlist doesn't start? If so, it would appear that de-selecting checking for updates in preferences would solve the problem. If you have enabled automatically checking for updates for software update (the app), it will notice any itunes updates also, but it shouldn't block itunes and hence your alarm from working.
