Okay, I just tried installing OSx86 to my laptop (Toshiba A200, 120gb HD, 2gb RAM, 128mb ATI card, Intel T7300), and get this error when I try to boot in verbose mode. Any ideas? I've tried everything I can think of. The HD has two partitions (one HFS+, one NTFS).

I use Asus P5k SE and This is my way to solve this problem.

1.Flash Rom Bios to 0704 (http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us )

2.Use USB-DVD rom by use adapter IDE>USB

3.Attach SATA Cable on Channel1

I got the "still waiting for root device" message.

I want to Install it on my Laptop, i cant change my Harddrive settings, because i don't want to open my laptop... what else can I do?

I have 3 Partitions 1. NTFS (WinXP), 2. NTFS (Recovery), 3. free.

I had this problem with the XxX 10.4.11 disc. I didn't have it without EFI, then erased the install and tried to install OS X with efi, and got this error. Seeing as the IOATAFamily.kext patch doesn't get applied by default if you install efi with this DVD, I guess this was the problem. Installing the IOATAFamily.kext from the Optional Kernels/Kexts menu fixed the problem.

This is with a PATA/IDE HD. Pretty sure all Macs these days have SATA HDs on them, so it should've been obvious that a vanilla HD controller wouldn't work 100%. Fixed it anyway.

Hi!

How do I install the IOATA kext when I even didn't get to the install screen?

Thanks.

EDIT: I have a pretty new Inspiron 6400.

EDIT2: Ok, I formated this "unallocated" to fat32 now. (Its a Primary Partition!)

Still... same "waiting for root device" error. :-(

I'm not entirely sure what DVD you're using to install, but if I remember right both the Kalyway and the XxX 10.4.11 come with several different IOATA kexts. basically, make sure you only have ONE version of that kext selected.

Boot into the install DVD, continue the install and select the drive/partition which has the OS X install already on it. Doing this and adding packages will only install the extra package(s) you select; it doesn't install the whole system again. If you're using the XxX dvd (and maybe Kalyway Leopard), then you need to make sure you only select the kext package you want as it defaults some other packages that you don't want.

But you have installed it on to your hard drive, right? When you boot the DVD and select next or whatever on the install screen, it asks you what partition/drive you want to install Tiger to. If you select the drive/partition which already has Tiger on it you can add packages for that install without having to do a whole re-install.

Thanks for helping me but...

...thats the point. I dont have Tiger on my Harddrive.

I have currently 4 Primary Partitions:

1. DellUtilities (Hidden)

2. OS (WinXP, NTFS)

3. RECOVERY (NTFS)

4. UNTITLED (Fat32) <---- I want to Install it here

I put the DVD in, try boot from it, then it hangs. I didnt get to anything, I only see the grey Picture.

No problem.

Thanks for helping.

Here are the last few lines in verbose mode:

Still waiting for root device

Hope it helps.

Thanks again.

Oh, and I tried with "cpu=1" and without. (Its an Intel Core Duo CPU).

Hi!

That was my first thought. But the biggest problem is that I cant change my Harddrive Settings in BIOS. (typical laptop BIOS). In BIOS are these options:

- System (none of these fields are changeable) :censored2:

System info

Processor Info

Memory Info

Device Info (under HD is only: Primary Hard Drive = 120 GB HDD)

....

...

and under the other Options aren't any Harddrive settings. :(

I try to ask the support center how I can change my Harddrive Settings, I will post the answer if it helps.

Okay, that's funny.

The support service just wrote back and they told me like this:

Sorry, but you are not able to change this setting in BIOS.

Not very helpfull.

Has anybody a hint or a solution for my problem?

Maybe a Laptop User?

Thanks anyway.

Look not too sure about laptops, but had that message when trying to install last time, I just disabled usb mouse in bios and it worked sweet after that, maybe my computer was just pissed off at me but it did work after that so it may be worth a try.

Also had problem ages ago when trying to install using a usb mouse (which is why a disabled usb mouse in bios) when I pluged in ps2 mouse worked like a charm.

May not fix but definately worth a try!

Good Luck!

  • 3 months later...

I was having this issue on my ASRock ConRoe945G-DVI. The board is equipped with a SATA controller. I have 3 hard drives and 2 optical drives plugged in. Two of the hard drives are connected by SATA, the last is by USB. One of my optical drives is an IDE, the other is SATA.

I found out my issue was attempting to install to a SATA drive from the IDE DVD drive. If this is the case with you, I suggest disconnecting all other drives than the ones you plan to use during the install process (I don't know how this works afterwards; I'm in the middle of the installation on my other computer).

Hope this helps some of you!

Stop yelling and complaining and do the most obvious course of action, put the hd on ide0 and set it as master.

Yeap,

I'done that too.

In fact I also took another SATA DVD drive / USB DVD drive and jumper it to master then slave vice-versa, but probably something else is fishy.

I have this setup :

Acer T180 x42 AMD MCP61 Athlon 4200+

2 Gb RAM

Geforce 7300GT

Marvell Yukon Eth

Firewire 800

Hd0- WD250Gb with 4 partitions (Leopard/Vista/NTFS/Fat32)

and

Hd1- HT250Gb Hard drive with another 4 partitions (NTFS/NTFS/NTFS for Tiger/Fat32 for Tiger)

I have quite a few iso’s i.e. :

Tiger - JaS 10.4.7 / JaS 10.4.8

Tubgirl 10.4.10

Kalyway 10.4.10 v1.1

Leo4All

Leo4Allv3

Zephyroth 10.5.1 AMD

Zephyroth 10.5.2 AMD

JaS 10.5.2 Intel

Tubgirl XxX 10.4.11 Rev1 (TPB)

Tubgirl XxX 10.4.11 Rev2

Kalyway 10.5.2 Intel AMD

I got lucky with installations using any of those Leopards to other personal machines such as :

Dell Inspiron 6400 Intel GMA945 1.5Gb RAM (SATA 160Gb – 4 partitions), and

Custom built machine C2Q6600 Intel Abit IP35E 2Gb RAM 8500GT 256Mb with 3 Hard drives – 2 SATA (250Gb + 320Gb) and 1 IDE WD160Gb.

BUT… everytime I am installing a Tiger I will have a problem of various errors :

“waiting for root device” – SATA in C2Q

“USB caused wake event (EHCI)” – SATA in C2Q

“AppleNForceATA not found” – PATA in AMD

I read InsanelyMac and OSX86 project nearly everyday from 3 months ago, but every installation of Tiger never success – probably theres SATA / jMicron in C2Q Abit IP35E.

It looks like a Tiger may not be installed when it detects a SATA drive in any machine.

Or do I forgot that Tiger doesn’t like SATA?.

To the above configurations, can anyone specifically advise me the correct attitude to install a Tiger 10.4.11. I’ve been link to many instructions but no, no luck yet.

I booted the installer on my AMD64 3200+ but after some seconds the installer hangs and after some more seconds diplays the "Still waiiting for root device" message. I have a Primary master IDE HD and a SATA2 HD on 4th SATA.

I tried also too boot the installer at my work on an AMD Athlon with a SATA HD on Sata2 and it worked. I also tried on a laptop and worked too.

I think the Primary master HD and Secondary master DVD solution is just a fiasko.

What can i do???!!!
