ReznorB5
I have this same problem. I've tried it from 3 different Macs (2 G5s and one a MacBook Pro). Target is an external FireWire 800 drive that I recently erased and need to repartition. I fear the worst. All 3 systems have 10.4.10 installed. Okay, i'd be glad if you told me how to fix it if you manage to format it. ~pcwiz
The cause (usually) for this is because you are using a SATA drive. Even if you put a SATA drive in a FireWire enclosure, its still recognized as SATA. Install to an IDE (PATA) hard drive and I don't think you'll get these errors. crymsinwyrm
I don't have a PATA drive. I heard there was a SATA driver in development. I've searched in the forums, but all I could find was at http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=35985. Perhaps I've missed something in there, but there wasn't anything for people with only SATA drives where we get the input/output error. You have any idea? ~pcwiz
I haven't found a different solution. Try Googling the problem to see what you find. Your last resort is to get a PATA drive or an external USB/FireWire drive. I'm running OS X on an external drive and it works fine. The drive is 250GB and its only about 90 bucks. crymsinwyrm
Yeah, that's probably what I'll end up doing. Other question: have you heard much about running OSx86 on a USB flash drive? That'd be a whole lot easier to carry around than an external... ~pcwiz
Running on a flash drive is only useful for EMERGENCY purposes. Its pretty slow. External drive is a better choice.
