I installed Mac OSx86 version 10.4.8 with kernel 8.8.1 using the JaS installation DVD. I'm not sure if there were any patches included. During the installation I formatted the harddrive partition with HFS+ (journaling enabled) and then installed the base system. I also check boxes for X11, NVidia Graphics support, INTEL patch, and Intel Only login crash patch. When I rebooted the system, I got the kernel panic message. Below is what appeared on the screen beneath the kernel panic dialogue.

As for my computer, here are its specs: Medion M3 Composer 5200 (scroll down)

I've installed a 2nd harddrive (Seagate 320 GB) and made 3 partitions (1 Linux, 2 Vista, 3 OSX) which are managed by GRUB 0.97 installed on the MBR.

I tried starting up OSX and pressing F8 and entered -v -s. This shows a bunch of high speed messages. (Barely readable, I think they're kext loading messages) I don't even have an opportunity to enter anything else after I hit enter.

My video card is an NVidia GeForce PCX 5300.

Thanks for your time. I'm sorry if it's already been posted but I can't seem to find a solution to my problem.

Ok, I have more information. Maybe a solution will become evident in my endless rambling.

I think the problem is due to hardware. I checked the compatibility lists but I was unable to find my graphics card, even though I'm pretty sure it's compatible.

I installed OSX again with the natit 0.1, natit 0.2, and titan nvidia patches. I also installed the login window fix (again), USB drivers, and Ralink Wireless USB drivers (I have one). This time I changed the startup disk to my harddrive and then instead of kernel panic, a grey loading screen with a darker apple showed up. After the loading wheel spun a couple of times, my monitor turned off (with the computer still on) and just stayed that way. This, I think, strongly suggests a video card problem. But since I'm new to Mac I have no idea what I need to do... :)

Here's my hardware:

Harddrive:

Seagate ST3320620AS

Revision: 3.AAE

Serial Number: 9QF4BSQH

BSD Name: disk0

Protocal: ata

Unit Number: 0

Socket Type: Serial-ATA

OS9 Drivers: No

S.M.A.R.T. Status: Not supported

This also shows only 2 volumes, 1 for windows (disk0s2) and another for Mac (disk0s3)...

DVD RW DVR-MCC:

Rev. 1.11

BSD Name: disk1

Protocal: ATAPI

Unit #: 0

Socket Type: Internal

Low Power Polling: No

OS9 Drivers: No

S.M.A.R.T. Status: Not supported

My secondary DVD drive is the same except:

IDE DVD-ROM 16X

Rev. VER 7.92

Unit Number: 1

Display:

NVIDIA (0x10de)

DevID: 0x00fc

RevisionID: 0x00a2

Kernel Extension info: no kext loaded

Ok, so I think it may be the video card. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Do the OS9 Drivers have anything to do with my problem?

Thanks again for listening guys!

Ok. Here's an update...

I've looked through my CPU info (with linux) again and found out that my CPU doesn't support SSE3... (I could've sworn I'd seen it here before...) Oops.

I reinstalled with the SSE2 kernel and it's still giving me problems. Of course I included the IOSATAKext and Intel login window fix. Those could be left out.

My computer is unchanged. ...I will not give up.

Another Update.

I know I already tried disabling Hyper Threading, but I didn't realize that the system would configure itself to accommodate for the "fake" 2nd CPU. This time, I disabled HT and installed Mac again. I didn't use the loginwindow patch or the IOSATA thingy either.

I needed to apply the CPUPowerManagementRemoval (or something...) patch. I found this out when I received a kernel panic with this error. That was solved. After setting up the Startup disk to the partition on my harddrive, I was again greeted by this grey bootsplash.

This time, the monitor did not turn off. It remained this way with the whirling loading symbol and a "prohibited" sign popped up in the center. You know, the one with a circle and a bar going through the center. Does anyone know what this means? Thanks again.

At least I get "normal" errors now, if you know what I mean.

I installed the intelloginwindow fix and tried booting with -v.

Extension "com.apple.driver.iTunesPhoneDriver" has no kernel dependency

Still waiting for root device

I've seen topics on this problem before so I'll stop talking to myself and look around.

In the meantime, does anyone know what the "com.apple.driver.iTunesPhoneDriver" is and if I need to worry about it? iTunesPhone? ...Driver? ;)

EDIT: Sorry, I forgot to add that my Motherboard is ASUS P4P800S-X and that my harddrive uses a SATA cable.

I have the same output without the intel loginwindow fix. I'll keep it off for now.

I can't switch the harddrive to Primary Master. My box isn't configured to be able to do that... So I hope that's not the problem.

I don't have any VIA ATA ports and I don't have an nForce motherboard. Won't boot in safe mode.

I even tried deleting ApplePS2Controller.kext through the terminal on the dvd installation... (har har)

I have another correction, my motherboard is actually MEDIONPC MS-7046. It's an OEM board.

I could find the Asus P4P800S-Deluxe on the 10.4.8 compatibility list, but this one's not on it. Despite this, I'm pretty sure that there is no problem with it.

Apparantly, many people are having problems with "Still waiting for root device" and SATA Harddrives, huh?

What exactly does IOATAFamily.kext do? It seems important but it just makes my system reboot before I can reach the output in verbose mode...

I tried using SATA legacy mode. Didn't work. Is there a way to make the bios change the harddrive position to Primary Master? I have Phoenix 2.06. Someone needs to explain SATA/IDE port positioning to me... (What is this IDE-0 and IDE-1 stuff?!)

Pretty please?

I'm baaaack!

I found a way using the BIOS (with Combined mode SATA) to make my harddrive Primary Master. It still gives the "Still waiting for root device" error. So that's out.

The solution was only temporary too. I have 2 harddrives and with Combined mode, I would not be able to use the other harddrive.

Back to searching...

Oh, wow. Feedback!

Well, first of all, sorry for the late reply. School just started again.

If you have the installation DVD, put that in and boot it up. Then use the terminal under system utilities.

It's not a GUI or anything. Just a bare-bones emergency xterm that should last long enough to fix the problem.

cd for changing directory. eg) cd System

rm -rf to delete files. eg) rm -rf System ***Careful!!!***

You want to delete your wireless driver kext (I think). It should be in /System/Library/Extensions/.

Good luck! (And don't delete your root folder!)

Now to find the solution to my own problem...

Hi,

I get the same error efter an installation. First off I couldnt even get the uphuck 10.4.9 r2 DVD to boot.

So I swtiched the BIOS SATA value RAID->auto. So it installed.

But now the installation does not boot with the same error as Megaman:

Extension "com.apple.driver.iTunesPhoneDriver" has no kernel dependency

I hope that this is just a matter of enabling the right drivers?

I have a DELL Dimension 9200

-Intel 965P chipset

-ATI X1300Pro 256Mb Graphics

-SATA HDD and DVD

Input enyone, please?

Mattias

I don't think that's an error. It just says that the ITunesPhoneDriver isn't used by the kernel, I think. (Judging by what "kernel dependency" means). I saw this error message when booting the disk, so it doesn't affect boot either.

Have you tried waiting a while to see if "still waiting for root device" comes up?

If not, try booting with -v by pressing F8 at startup or seeing if a circle with a bar through it comes up at the boot splash...

Extension "com.apple.driver.iTunesPhoneDriver" has no kernel dependency is not an error. I get that every time I boot and my install boots just fine. Do you have an Intel processor?

I tried installing Leopard (y'know, just in case it was more compatible. I hoped.) and the boot disk didn't even start up.

It kernel panicked upon completion of loading all the drivers (successfully) and I have no idea why. It outputs all the usual things that it does when starting up (args on stack, timeslicing quantum, etc) and then calls panic().

I'll try again and see if it only looked like it was kernel panicking and just needed some extra time to boot...

*sigh*

Hmm...

I've been thinking of getting a new graphics card. (GeForce 8600 GT)

This seems to be a good compromise for price and power.

However, I have not seen it on the 10.4.8 and 10.4.9 (or 10.5) compatibility lists.

Do you guys have any suggestions on which card I should choose? More specifically, is there a slightly lower model (eg, 7800 GTX) or something/configuration known to work on Mac OSx86?

Thanks!
