CIA Devaney
Let me frist start out by saying I'm really stoked to be doing all this reading on the possiblity of installed OS X on my system. My question comes down to is do I have the right hardware to do it... AMD Athlon XP2600 Processor Radeon 9200 AGP Video card 1GB DDR3200 MEM 80 GB ATA HD Master 30 GB ATA HD Slave NEC DVD\CDRW X16 Burner Realtech AC97 Audio On board Sound Card Via Rhine II Fast Ethernet On Board NIC Card Saitek USB Gamer Keyboard IBM USB Mouse With that said, do I have all the hardware to make my dream of running Mac OS X a reality?? xtraa
Not sure. The points of interests missing here are: - does your CPU support SSE3, or at least SSE2? - does your CPU support PAE and NX/XD - what chipset is on your mainboard (via/sis/nforce2-4/etc) you can check all of this by downloading two windows-tools: do a google search for "cpuz" and another one for "everest", should be the first result. both are diagnostic tools, that show you the features of your CPU. If your AthlonXp only supports SSE, and not at least SSE2, then you are not able to install OSX on your system. Good luck Edited December 14, 2005 by xtraa Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/5799-amd-atholn-xp2600/#findComment-36625 Share on other sites
CIA Devaney
My processor only supports SSE, The CHipset is VIA as for the second one, I was unable to find that info. WOuld I beable to run Mac OS 9 maybe? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/5799-amd-atholn-xp2600/#findComment-36643 Share on other sites
silentbob
There is no macos9 for intel as far as I know. For osx86 min. requirement is cpu wit sse2 and PAE support. End. jdsony
You could run Mac OS 9.1 with the emulator called Shapeshifter. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/5799-amd-atholn-xp2600/#findComment-36654 Share on other sites

OSX will not run natively but you can try pearPC to run the PPC version or QEMU to run the x86 version as virtual machine. Booth will be slow: http://forum.osx86project.org/index.php?showtopic=5132&hl= Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/5799-amd-atholn-xp2600/#findComment-36911 Share on other sites
wiebeest
OSX will not run natively but you can try pearPC to run the PPC version or QEMU to run the x86 version as virtual machine. Booth will be slow: True. Basically for the optimal x86 Tiger experiance you'd need a CPU capable of SSE2 & SSE3 at this moment. If your cpu doesn't have SSE3 but has SSE2, you can use a patch, but the SSE3 calls constantly need to be translated to SSE2 equivelants through this patch, so that will always be slower tah wtih a SSE3 cpu, you'll do the math. That being said, Maxxuss' 0.5c patch works great for 10.4.1 on SSE2 only CPU's, such as my AMD64 Winchester. And currently Maxxuss is refining a patch for the current 10.3.4 (built 8F11111a), but that's not quite stable yet. Thogh I sincerely hope he'll get's the job done, because with each version Tiger get's more stable and supports more features such as graphic card drivers (...but narrows down the supported vanilla x86 hardware deviant to the specs of it's developpers pc specs... ) Unfortunately it seems that with each new built of x86 Tiger Apple is integrating more and more SSE3 calls, so I fear that not only the AthlonXP owners, such as yourself, but also the SSE2 only CPU-owners will be f ed in the long run... There are reports of QUEMU running x86 os X on non-SSE2 cpu's (such as your AMD XP), like you can read about in the link provided by DrJägermeister, but it is horrobly slow. I think your best bet would be PearPC, under a trimmed down Linux, running the PPC (non-x86) version of Tiger...or maybe 10.3.9 Panther would be even better? See the forums of PearPC.net website and the likes of it. Currently a dude named Jens is working on hardware acceleration, which should boost performance considerably. Check it out. Good luck.
