hi i just used acronis disk director to create an 8 gb partition of space, but when it asked for a format i just left it as none

i restarted and booted from the uphuck disk, everything went fine, until it got to the part in the installer where it says choose destination i think

nothign showed up, so i started the disk utility from the cd and it showed the 8gb partition and i tried to erase and format to a mac extended (journaled) format, but it says something like "needs a mount point"

when i select the 8gb partition and click mount at the top nothing happens

i think its cus the partition has no format right now, so im going to format it into a certain file system, but i dont know which one to do

any advice, the options acronis gives me are

ntfs, fat, fat32, linux swap, and a couple others i think

thanks for your responses

hey man thanks alot, ill try now, if not ill be back in like 15 minutes :)appreciate the speedy response too, didnt want to have to wait till tomorrow im too pumped for osx :)ok so that didnt actually work, it still gives me error messageswhen i hit erase free space, i get something saying no mount pointwhen i hit erase, it says its erasing and formatting to mac extended journaled, but it finishes and nothing has actually changedwhen i hit information about the partition i get these detailsName: diskOs3Typer: VolumeDisk Identifier: diskOs3Mount Point: Not Mountedconnection bus: atawriteable: yesowners enabled: nocan turn owners off: nocan be formatted: nobootable: nosupports journaling: nojournaled: noi think the problem is, that it is not mountedcan anyone help me out please

Hey, Humantorch, in my experience, format your partition to fat32, that should work with the "erase." If not, get back to me.

OS X can read and write to FAT32 file system. This therefore means when you get to the Disk Utilities section of the installation, it will actually see the 8GB FAT32 partition and will also be able to format that again to HFS+ extended.

I normally use diskpart in Windows. Not sure what that method formats the partition initially to but OS X is also able to read that format.

what would be wrong then, because it does not see the space at all

and wont erase it

it keeps saying in the bottom left in disk utility that the partition is "not mounted"

Have you tried formatting it again with acronis but this time to FAT32? Do that and then try the installation.

yes ive tried using completely unformatted free space

fat32 primary partition

and linux swap format

all three show up as a grey partition in disk utility, when i click mount they dont mount, when i hit erase it acts like its doing it with the progress bar in the bottom right, but then it goes back to disk utility screen and again its unmounted still in old format and nothing has changed

I can't say why it's not working Sorry. Never been in that situation.

All I can suggest is maybe you try a different format method. The diskpart method. It might be a waste of time but then again you never know. I managed to find an old post I made ages ago of it so here you go.

I would delete the partition you tried to format first and then create a partition in the unpartitioned space using the diskpart method.

Hope it works. Best of luck.
