After lurking long enough here I've been able to build and maintain a perfectly usable Celeron-D Mac running 10.4.8 (thanks JaS!) for the past few months. Now I'm trying to build a FAST system, and have successfully installed Uphuck's stellar 10.4.9 v1.3 DVD package on my platform of choice:

  • Gigabyte GA-965G-DS3 motherboard (G965 Express NB / ICH8 SB)
  • Core 2 Duo E6400 CPU at 2.13 GHz
  • Gigabyte branded GeForce 7300GT PCI-E video
  • (2) 512MB PC5300 DDR2
  • 160GB Seagate SATA2 HD
  • Generic SATA DVD-RW

I chose the version of the board with onboard GMA 3000 video but am not using it, as I haven't seen yet that it's supported in other than VESA mode -- the board with onboard video was just cheaper than the otherwise identical board without. Go figure.

Installation went smoothly once I replaced the crappy Apacer RAM I started with (which threw random errors all over the place whenever I tried to install), and I now have a very fast and apparently stable 10.4.9 installation. 7300GT card works beautifully under Natit (my thanks to all involved in that brilliant project). However, I have encountered a few small but significant problems that I was hoping would prove to be easy fixes for more experienced members. They are as follows:

  • Onboard Marvell 88E8053 is not recognized by Apple's Yukon driver. Network prefpane crashes on load. I have tried simply replacing the hex ID in the appropriate Info.plist but no luck. This is the only serious problem I'm experiencing; sound I can do without, and I only have two SATA devices anyway (see next 2 posts).
  • The 4 SATA ports controlled by the ICH8 do not work, period. Kernel hangs on boot with a variety of "Still waiting..." errors if those ports are enabled in BIOS. I have installed the ICH8 support package included on Uphuck's DVD but notice no change in behavior.
  • ALC883 sound is not working. I confess I haven't even tried sorting through all the sound driver posts here, and am instead hoping to shamelessly throw myself on the mercy of someone who has already figured out what exactly to do to make it work.

Other than that, it's working great!

Seriously, thanks to all whose work made this possible, and thanks very much for any further help. I hope I can officially add this board to the HCL soon.

Thanks STiCKpIN!

A few updates:

  • Networking fails equally with Yukon disabled in firmware and Realtek-based PCI NIC installed instead. Same pattern: no en0, Network prefpane crashes.
  • This MOBO has two sets of SATA ports. The two I am using successfully* are in AHCI mode. These are controlled by a Gigabyte-badged IC, I don't know the actual chipset. The other four are controlled by the ICH8 and if IDE emulation is selected in FW, are politely ignored. If Native Mode is selected for these ports, boot fails. I should have been more clear in my initial post.

* The two "Gigabyte" (or whatever) managed SATA ports work adequately, although I cannot boot from my SATA DVD drive without the dreaded "com.appl.eboot.plist" error and, ironically, the system will always TRY to boot from that drive regardless of the boot device selected in FW, so I cannot keep a bootable DVD in the drive across restarts. This is irritating but not critical. It would, however, be good to get those remaining ports enabled at some point.

Thanks for your help. I'm now trying to downgrade to 10.4.7 networking and may try a different kernel.

Update:

I noticed the following message while booting:

AppleYukon: <blah blah> Failed to get ACPI device

There are some power management flags in the AppleYukon driver plist. I wonder if the Yukon driver is failing not because of an ID mismatch but instead due to an ACPI problem. Any thoughts?
