So first of all i have been going through few website to know what was possible, and most of all what was compatible...

Since i'm not really familiar with PC hardware (but i tend to change), i don't really know the specs :S need help, PLEASE! I would love to run OSX during January '06.

So here is a what i have choose, please let me know if that could be working without having too much trouble, i want to run it natively no VMware thingy.

-Intel Pentium 4 540J (3.2 GHz) Socket 775 0.09 micron FSB800 but i might buy an EMT64 intel proc if OSX supports it, but i have no clue about it.

-ASUSTeK Vintage PH1 (Intel 915G)

-TRENDnet TEW-423PI -PCI WiFi 802.11g

-Pioneer DVR-110D- DVD(+/-)RW

-Maxtor SATA drive 200 gigs

- 1Gb no name RAM

If this box works, I might also buy a PCIexpress ATI video card, a decent one, but since on the motherboard there is a intel GMA 900, i know i won't have troubles with the display part (QE and Core Image)

My goal would be to have a powerful PC box running OS x to be able to:

share 3D rendering with various apps.

stream DIVX with VLC over my house to my G5 and iBook,

manage my MP3s,

and why not stream TV with a TV card or ELGATO Eye something box.

And beta test few apps and Games that I have on my G5.

thank you in advance

If I might suggest (with the current way things are going with the display drivers) perhaps getting an Ati x800 series for PCI express. I have one on the way for aroun 100 bucks from Newegg, so I'm going to try it out and see if it works with the new 8f1111a build. ATI tends to be a safe ticket right now (although I prefer Nvidia really for my PC side of things), but Nvidia has been kept out of the driver loop it looks like. Also I heard from a few people that a dvd install with Sata is kinda a pain, so I'm not sure where they are at with that really, so you may wanna keep a look out. As for games... that may be some time till those work great, but it's always good to try new things and share them on the forum

I still think if you're not only a gamer, that a dual-core CPU is better for OS X. It really benefits from multiple cores or SMP. :)

Also, just keep in mind that there is no guarantee that future builds will work on your box... Just a warning. :)

And, you might as well get a 945 chipset, no point buying an old one when new ones have good support and will just get more in time anyway.

Thank you for your reply, so i think i'm heading towards a Dual Core type of processor, but the thing is that Yonah is supposed to come out for the next semester. Should i wait or not? it will depends if Apple is realeasing Mactel this january.

I'm a casual gamer but for that i have my PS2, having a OSX86 box is a challenge for me.

Some people might yell at me but if this box is working, It will end up in a wall cupboard....

In the worse case i can still install a Linux Distro to use it as a server and few other fonctions.

Yonah might cost a bit too much at debut, and you'll need to wait on motherboards as well (there are some hacks to get Dothan to work on 478 boards anyway). Might end up being March before you can get a dual-core Yonah system setup on your own for a reasonable price.

A Pentium-D doesn't suck for gaming, it more depends on a video card, unless you only go by FPS numbers and play at low resolution. They do run a bit hot though, and the stock heatsink+fan is way too noisy.

Why not wait until January and see what happens? It really isn't too far off now at this point. Dual core all the way though if you build your own.

Pentium D is deffinetely worth it if you have the spare pocket change :poster_oops:

I'm curious also to what will be the final version of Osx86. I have a feeling though that with all the PC-mac people on these forums that collectively we will just keep getting better and better builds working for our purposes. It's been fun to play for sure!

i'll see how Apple is going to react towards the x86 undeground project. Maybe i'll go for a Dual Core, got to figure it out and check my finances... :-)

Knowing them, and what S.Jobs wants, i know they will lock up the system in a way or another. S.Jobs wanted Apple to be a software company, but running on proprietary machines. He is a visionair so let's see... But it will take "decades" to crack it, Apple always had breathtaking things. i guess that they are working on something strong, but not uncrackable for sure knowing that there is people like Maxxuss or else.
