Hello Fellow OS X86 users!

My Name is Jason, you can call me Jase, In a couple of days I will be buying a new computer the specs are:

Intel Pentium 4 - SS2 Support

1.5 GB ram

350 GB Hard drive

256 MB ATI Graphics card

Now my only thoughts are:

Would I be able to run OS X?

Would there be a downside to running OS X on an 86 machine?

Does Parallels work?

Are there any Driver issues with OS X 86?

Would OS X run fine on my system?

And finally do you guys think its better than a real mac?.. is there a diference?

Also note if these questions have already been answered please don't flame me, I would like to finally ditch using Windows and use a system that is right for me - mind you I have been waiting to use OS X for more than 3 years now but the current CPU which is an AMD Athlon XP does not have SS2.

Thank you for reading I look forward to hearing your replies.

Ok - Well I got mine up and running last night and it's nearly matching upto my fathers Mac Pro on Xbench results (which is damn fast).

When installing don't expect not to have problems. There are always problems, it just takes a little while to sort through them. (For example my graphics card was my first major problem, then the sound and LAN but after finding the right drivers it great)

The specs of your new computer appear fine, although the graphics description is a bit vague, if you could be more specific we could see whether there are any existing problems. Also the motherboard.

It's best to do a little research before hand (on these forums) to see whether there are any problems/solutions that exist with the new hardware your buying.

Would I be able to run OS X?

Probably. You should try downloading different install discs if not successful with the first one.

Would there be a downside to running OS X on an 86 machine?

Yes, of course. You have to be careful with updates, as it sometimes changes your files making it impossible to boot to OSX again. Some of your usb/firewire ports might not work, your sound (input/output) might not work properly, etc etc etc.

Does Parallels work?

It does, but on your rig it would run pretty slow... it's best performed in Core 2 Duos.

Are there any Driver issues with OS X 86?

It depends on your hardware. Sometimes you need to hack into the codes; add a little line here and there to make it work.

Would OS X run fine on my system?

I guess it would run OK.

And finally do you guys think its better than a real mac?.. is there a diference?

There is nothing, I repeat, nothing more satisfying than using a real Mac when using OSX. I love my MPB and it's by far the best computer I've ever had and dreamed of.

Downloading Mac OS X 10.4.6 x86 Install DVD (JaS) right now..

how do I burn this is there a method I have to follow or is it just a simple extract then burn?

also do I just chuck it into the dvd rom and reboot the PC?

Do yourself a favour and start with a newer version.

Jas 10.4.8 minimum but Uphuck 1.3 or 1.4 probably best.

Intel Pentium 4 - SS2 Support

1.5 GB ram

350 GB Hard drive

256 MB ATI Graphics card

Well I think that we could give you a more accurate picture of whether your hardware will work if you provide us with model numbers for your audio, ethernet and video devices. Which ATI card? Which motherboard? They make 350GB harddrives???

Just downloaded uphuck, it gave me a large selection of items to install for my pc.. first thing is first.. how do I know what is the right one? "ATI x...." - I don't have a clue what this means.

my gfx card is an ATI Radeon 9600

also the same applies with my Network and sound.. I don't know what To install.. every time I install the ktext file.. os x boots and gives me Kernal panics.. what do I do?
