Hi Forum,

I have been trying without any success for the last few weeks to make my MacBook a triple boot.

I partitioned the disk using diskutil into three partitions as follows. (Not boot camp)

#: type name size identifier

0: GUID_partition_scheme *111.8 GB disk0

1: EFI 200.0 MB disk0s1

2: Apple_HFS Mac OSX 81.0 GB disk0s2

3: Linux 15.0 GB disk0s3

4: Microsoft Basic Data Win XP 15.5 GB disk0s4

I have installed Mac OS X on partition 2 and Windows on partition 4. I install rEFIt and I can boot both systems.

I have installed RedHat Linux Release 5 onto partition 3, selecting /dev/sda3 to have GRUB installed (into the partition)

When I come to reboot I never see Linux in the rEFIt . I can boot RedHat in rescue mode and the installation is detected.

What do I need to do to get Linux to appear in rEFIt so I can boot Red Hat Linux.

Thank

Stuart

You'll need to find a way to use LILO. GRUB doesn't like to work on Macs unless you can find a way to run the gptsync command before the GRUB installation but after you install the Linux system. I believe Ubuntu does this automatically, but no other distro I know of does so.

So instead of fooling with gptsync during the bootloader installation, just use LILO. It's not too different from GRUB, and you probably won't notice the difference. I don't know if Red Hat includes LILO as an option... you might need to pick another distro or find some other way to install it.

Also make sure you sync the partitions in rEFIt after you install. This is very important, as just about any non-Apple operating system has a tendency to screw with the GPT/MBR sync and make themselves unbootable.
