tgg
I followed a guide to dual boot xp and mac osx but I might have done a step wrong. I have 1 80gig hard drive in my pc and I had two partitions 60 gig which is the primary c: and a 20 gig which is d:. Now for all this time I had xp install on c: and vista on d: which you guys know vista boot loader takers over the xp one. Now what I did is within windows xp I formated the second partion being vista as fat32. before this though I install that acronis director suite it did that choose installer thing. Now I rebooted the pc with the dvd disk mac osx and installed it but whenever the pc restarts I dont see the acronis director loader to chose a OS it just defualts at the POST in loading mac osx nothing to do with a windows os. Now if I hit anykey at the darwin boot screen to see more options I do see a windows boot choice above the macosx one but then it goes to the vista own boot loader like it always have in the past but If choose win xp it gives that /ntldr error.Anyone know a fix for my windows install and what I did wrong? Ok I fix the xp issue I'm able to load up xp I did the "fixboot command in the recovery console of the xp disk.NOw this is the guide I followed http://dilnalomo.googlepages.com/Now I want to do the dual boot right, So now I dont even see the mac osx partion drive in my computer in xp I thing becuase its a mac formatted drive right? So How do i go about succesfully dual booting macosx? cbmkgd
Your original problem was due to the fact that vista took over xp's ability to boot by itself, backing-up (or deleting) it's necessary boot files (c:\ntldr, c:\ntdetect.com, c:\boot.ini, and maybe one or two others); it might also have changed the bootsector of the partition. Using xp's recovery cd was the right step to repair the mess. When you fixed xp's booting, it wrote a normal mbr to boot the active xp partition, overwriting the acronis os selector (aoss) specific mbr. You have at least three possibilities: Forget aoss and use darwin's bootloader: make the osx partition active (eg from xp's disk manager, or using the acronis bootable media to load its diskdirector on cd, or using the osx install dvd and using the terminal); this should make osx boot by default; then read Messing with the boot options to set the timeout count-down; so when osx boots you'll get a menu with xp like before. [*]Forget aoss and use the chain0 method: copy the file chain0 from your osx install dvd to the root (c: ) of your xp partition; open the c:\boot.ini file and insert the following line under [Operating system]: C:\chain0="Mac OS X" "Quiet Boot"="Yes" remove the semi-colon in front of the timout in the [boot loader] section; you should now have a menu at first where you can chose osx; boot and chose osx, pressing F8 right away to get the darwin btldr menu, and chose osx. repeat step b above to fix the timeout of darwin bootloader; you now have dual-boot with the chain0 method, with two menus to get to osx. [*]Third method is to re-activate the acronis os selector by using the acronis bootable media. Hopefully, once reactivated, aoss will give you two oses to boot. Make sure aoss sets osx partition to be active when selected to boot (read the acronis disk director to know how to). There may be a few holes to fill in each steps, I'll leave them to you. Good luck. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/56408-dual-boot-issue-xp-and-mac-osx/#findComment-403170 Share on other sites
