The error I'm describing could affect countless applications. If you're having problems with uphuck v1.3, this is why.

 

Earlier I noticed a small issue with itunes in this install, it wouldn't interface correctly with itunes and would not authenticate me to play songs (but it would log me in). Earlier today, I tried to use aptana (a web development IDE), only to discover that /usr/bin/java wasn't working. Upon closer inspection, I realized that /usr/bin/java was a symlink that was pointing to "System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/CurrentJDK/Commands/java". Notice how System does NOT begin with "/". This means that every /usr/bin/java was trying to point at /usr/bin/System/(etc...), a directory that obviously does not exist. Adding the "/" to the beginning of the link solved my aptana issue. I still wanted the songs I bought a while back in itunes to work, so I did some more investigation. Quickly I discovered that almost every symbolic link in /usr/bin that should point to /System/(whatever) is actually pointing to System/(whatever)!

 

The massive number of executables missing could cause countless problems, slow downs, etc... I'm going to write a script to fix all these symbolic links and I will post it here after I test it and make sure it won't cause any damage.

 

Here's the sample output of running "ls -lh" in /usr/bin. /usr/bin/java is already fixed, but you'll notice that tons of others are broken:

EDIT: It turns out this won't fix the itunes problem I was having, but it will probably cause any Java related problems to go away. If this problem applies to you, Java apps WILL NOT RUN unless you apply this fix.

 

EDIT: It's possible this affects many other installers other than uphuck

Well, here's the fix, coded in ruby. You need to copy the script in this code block(every last line of it) into a file, save it as fixosx.rb , and then run "sudo ruby fixosx.rb"

 

You absolutely must save this as *plain text*

The folder you're in doesn't matter, so long as your current working direction in the terminal is the same as where the file is. Make sure you copied the first two characters of the file. If it still doesn't work, in terminal do "chmod +x fixosx.rb" and then do "sudo ./fixosx.rb"

 

Are you certain the problem even applies to you?

My iTunes issue was because my network adapter was showing up as en2 instead of en0.

 

To fix it I simply deleted the NetworkInterfaces.plist fiile then rebooted.

 

The system generated a new file with the correct network card as en0.

 

I couldn't get preferences.plist to regenerate so i had to manually delete all references to en0 then change all references to en2 to en0 and once I rebooted it was good.

 

 

With all that being said....textedit has a save as option for plain text? I see rtf but not plain text.

My iTunes issue was because my network adapter was showing up as en2 instead of en0.

 

To fix it I simply deleted the NetworkInterfaces.plist fiile then rebooted.

 

The system generated a new file with the correct network card as en0.

TextEdit -> Preferences -> New Document -> "Format" pick RTF or Plain
