Hi guys! New to this whole thing, have a couple dumb questions if you got a minute. Here's my rig:

Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R motherboard, revision 1

Intel Core 2 Duo 6320 conroe 1.87GHz and 2GB gskill ddr800 ram

nvidia geforce 8800gts pci-e

1 x SATA seagate 320 GB <-- windows XP here

1 x SATA samsung DVDR drive

1 x IDE seagate 250 GB (master) <-- music and stuff, ntfs

1 x IDE seagate 120 GB (slave) <-- want OS X here

1 x USB IBM 20 GB <-- document backup, ntfs

(cooler master case, thermaltake ps, samsung flatpanel, unimportant to my question but YAY new computer braggin ;))

I have legitimate 10.4 install media (bought for a client, they didn't need, I ate the cost and put it on a shelf til the other night), but for this I'm using a downloaded JaS 10.4.8 installer image.

My question involves the "still waiting for root device" error while booting JaS. Googling about tells me I should "install to primary master" and move my DVD to primary slave. I could do the first thing easy enough, but the second thing is hard...since my optical drive is SATA. :D What should I do? I could unplug the SATA and USB hard drives temporarily for install, and I could swap the IDE drives such that the desired OS X disk is the master. But I'm confused as to what, exactly, that changes as far as the installer DVD's boot process is concerned. Someone fill in my swiss cheese knowledge here? Thanks! :censored2:

2D works, at least. I think. The JaS installer boots in VMware on this machine, and display works. If there's no 3D accelleration for awhile, I don't mind. I use windows for gaming and all that. I'm lookin to use mac OS for day to day stuff and windows for games.

besides your actual problem I think the nvidia 8800 not working yet in OSX

Update:

I'm a n00b as far as that whole SATA thing, this computer I built replaced a 7 year old jobbie with no SATA. So, I didn't really understand how it worked, but I think I have a better idea now. The gigabyte mobo I have considers the SATA ports to be IDE ports, and assigns them all master/slave positions on what I can only assume to be virtual IDE buses. I really don't fully understand how it works.

ANYWAY....

I figured out which two ports are primary master/slave. For anyone with the same board, it's the orange pair in the upper right of the SATA port cluster (when the mobo is mounted in a tower). Kitty-corner from the purple SATAII ones. The top one is primary master, the bottom is slave. I put the optical drive on the primary slave, and the uphuck 10.4.9 installer boots and installs. But, I tried installing to my IDE hard drive (as desired), and while the install completed...the IDE drive with OS X on it doesn't boot. It POSTs, and then hangs with a blinking cursor indefinitely.

Sooooooo...

I went to CompUSA over lunch and picked up an IDE to SATA adapter. I'm going to try that. I'll plug it into the IDE drive and then plug that into the correct SATA port for "primary master." I'll let y'all know how it turns out.

I tried OSx86 10.4.6 with:

GA-P35C-DS3R

Intel Core2Duo E6750 @2.66mhz

2GB Ram DDR2

Gainward nvidia Bliss 8500GT PCX 256mb

20GB Fujitsu IDE

DVD LG GSA-4163B

got:

"Waiting for boot volume with UUID 732B1B37-E75B-3115-8B90-5011C6E7A10B"

"Still waiting for root device"
