Infamous blinking cursor (booting) error and another problem

Ok so I'm a little stuck, I've installed 10.4.8 JaS version a couple of times now. But on every install the only way I can get this to boot is using the dvd itself. I've read about a number of solutions, but I want to be sure. I think my problem is that my partition table is set on APM (Apple Partition Map). The problem however is that when I install OSX I can't change this anywhere using disc utility from the installer (the version is too old?). And within Tiger itself it of-course can't format it's own harddrive. So what would be the best way to fix this ?

My second question is regarding my DVD writer. I'm using a NEC 3520AW. OSX doesn't seem to recognize this as a dvd writer at all. And as soon as I go to system profiler to check the specifications the whole program freezes. Does anyone else have this writer of does anyone know about any drivers whatsoever?

Thanks in advance.

Yes its a partition issue. Both APM and GUID fail to boot on my hackintosh (not sure if anyone has gotten GUID booting..).

The uphuck DVD has a "options" button on the partitioning tab allowing you to force MBR (which should get you sorted boot-wise). JaS 10.4.8 had a few patches for Disk Utility, one of which I think forced MBR...

If you're really stuck and don't want to download another ISO partition w/ a WinXP CD then do an erase to HFS+ (from your Jas disk utility) prior to install.

RE: unsupported Mac burner

try Patchburn which will attempt to import the drive into the system's supported drive list (http://www.patchburn.de/)

Thanks for the advice, I tried installing OSX by erasing to HFS+ journaled as well as unjournaled. Then I tried the trick where you create a harddisk partition first so it recreates a partition map but all methods don't seem to work. I guess my best bet is downloading that uphuck dvd, or try one of those patches. Does anyone know if there's a patch for the SSE3 version only though ?

Alright, thanks for the advice. Although I have my doubts cause even trying to fix the MBR with HD recovery tools from paragon or even after successfully formatting and partitioning my drive in MBR table by using a separate disk utility extracted from the 10.4.10 update (copied to USB drive, ran from terminal, and successfully partitioned with MBR) it still does the same. But who knows maybe doing it all over by installing XP will do the trick. I'll try that later...

Patchburn worked wonderfully though, thanks again!

Ok, can anyone tell me what the exact requirements are for OSX to boot normally without DVD?

I tried installing windows and erase my drive afterwards with disk utility from the installer, but it gave me the no operating system error. After trying to activate my OSX partition with fdisk it went back to the usual blinking cursor problem.

I'm trying to boot from a SATA drive set as primary master, and my BIOS set to enhanced mode (no dual boot btw).
