I now have OSx86 working (sort of) on my Asus P4PE with 2.4 Ghz P4. I have patched the deadmoo image with the improved SSE2 mach_kernel etc and used Disk Util restore to copy it over to a hard drive from vmware for native install. In order to do this I had to first install Darwin 8.0.1 - in that mode my onboard lan worked fine (it's broadcom NetXtreme) using the Darwin BCM5701 kext. Unfortunately it doesn't work in OSX. Error message is

"Allocate Interupt event source failed"

same thing appears to be the case for onboard AC97 sound.

System only works in platform=x86pc mode which is unfortunate because in ACPI mode it starts of finding onboard firewire but then later on hangs.

I also had to delete the ATI kext files (I have an AGP Radeon 9000) and the system ignores my attempts to set graphics mode to 1280x1024x32.

Main issue is really the network - without that it isn't really a computer!

It is pretty fast (compared to VMware) and with the SSE2 kernal fix it runs itunes etc nicely.

Any ideas on how to get network working - frustrating given the existence proof with Darwin. I could buy a new card but I'm worried the same thing may foul it up since it isn't driver incompatibility with the ethernet in this case.
