No Boot after Updating 10.4.5 to 10.4.9

Hi guys! Feels so warm in here...smile.giftomato.gif

Well, as the topic title says, I'm having problems when I update my Mac OSX from 10.4.5 (guess it's Myzar's distro) to 10.4.9 using the Intel Combo Update from Apple's Website.

I tell you my specs:

Dell Inspiron 6400

- Intel Core Duo 1.66 GHz

- 1024 MB RAM

- Broadcom Ethernet 440x (I guess it's something like that... tongue.gif)

- Intel PRO/WIRELESS 3495 (No, it's not working at all... thumbsdown_anim.gif)

- Intel GMA 950

Well, that's what matters.

Now, my thing is that I've tested 2 choices: Install and Update, and Install and start from DVD and start update (I saw it on a site I can't remember).

Obviously I cannot update Tiger thru Software Update, just look at the download time and I faint out (if you think I'm gonna leave my laptop for 37 hours, connected to my 34 kbps bandwidth internet in my office... you're just nutsblink.gif). So, I've no choices...

Well, I'll watch out if I can download the 10.4.9 JaS distro, but looking at my bandwith... it may take years. (Uh, this 10.4.5 disc was given to me as junk...)

So, now, after installing update, it just doesn't boot Mac, and reboots computer from the beginning (I'm sick of that Dell logo tongue.gif)...

What do you think I'm doing wrong?

(Is it my face????blink.gif)

Thanks in advance. wink_anim.gif

Generally, you can update with official Apple update :) You need to download update from Apple site or from torrent. Not thru Software Update. But you still need hacked kernel (search for latest on this forum or torrents). And with this way you can get manu problems with kexts (ie drivers). Actually I don't try update my system this way, 'cause of AMD, but for Intel, theoretically, it may work. Read this: http://netkas.freeflux.net/blog/archive/20...date-guide.html

Hacked updates with right kernels always wating for you on torrents :)

Guest Ramm

I don't want a username, you can't upgrade 4 versions in one go. The smart thing to do would be to download a new 10.4.8 (or .9), make a new partition, install it on there, and then use Migration Assistant.

Ramm, why you think there's no way to "upgrade 4 versions in one go"? I don't want to dispute with you, I just want to know.

And downloading a new version is realy better, instead of spending time on all this update things.

Well... but those updates are in complete distros. Now I'm downloading a JaS distro of 10.4.8 that comes with a 10.4.9 update. It will take a week or two...

Anyway, found a Update called "delta", and looking its size (160 MB) I knew that it was only for 10.4.8

But I still wanna update this 10.4.5 to a 10.4.8 or 10.4.9... 'cause I need to test the AppleHDA kext for this laptop. I tried it once, in 10.4.5, and it crashed (just like the author said in his post...).

Well... still more fighting. :censored2:

Always the smart thing is to download the new version integrated by itself... but my bandwidth is not so good to download 4.5 GB in a rush... :(

Anyway, I don't think that make a new partition would be the solution. I'm quite restricted with HDD usage (you can't do too much with a 40 GB HDD) so making a new partition implies directly to delete another partitions.

Well, I'll think about it...

In other words, there is no 10.4.5 to 10.4.9 direct, working (cracked for OSx86), update. There are really only one-version-at-a-time ones (eg. 10.4.7 -> 10.4.8).

Well, this guide talks about some 10.4.8 upgrade. Where can I get this update? Or maybe it's just upgrade the Kernel...?

UPDATE:

Man, I got really messed up with this thing. I don't understand the thing that says:

5: Now that combo update is finished, I suggest using a kernel with r2 support built in at least to help with first bootup post combo update. After you're up and running you can use decrypts if you want, and use a kernel without r2 support.

5A: Back to Terminal type mv /mach_kernel /mach_kernel.unpatched

5B: cp /location/to/your/patched/mach_kernel /mach_kernel

That's supposed that I backed up the previous mach_kernel, or I'm supposed to download a patched mach_kernel...

Dammit! :wallbash:

It's a question of Apple official update. Download it from Apple site.

I don't know much about r2 support, but I think Semthex's kernel have one (use Google to find Semthex's site).

In p. 5 Paulicat says that you need kernel with r2 support for FIRST BOOT after update. After you succesfuly boot you can use any kernel you want. 5A to backup your current kernel. 5B to replace current kernel with another, if you have one.

Man, don't complicate the issue. Just get update from Apple and any new kernel (you can use Ramm's Automated Kernel Updater eg) and try to update your OS.

Okie dokie... ;)

Ok. I red something in the Semthex site yesterday night, and I got interested in testing that.

And, now with your explanation, I get what's the point of Paulicat. ;) Whooo...

Man, It's not my idea to complicate this. It's just I'm new with this thing... I'm used to do some "apt-get" in my machine and have it all "done" (obviously it's not that easy sometimes, you got to put some of your knowledge and hands in setting the stuff).

Well, and talking about the REKU... seems that Ramm hasn't it uploaded... not even his site. He says something like this:

I am getting rid of it for now, until I figure out exactly why it refuses to work even with the user authenticated.

[...]

So I think I won't be able to use REKU for some time. :(

Well, thanks for your help. I guess I'll be asking how does it go with Paulicat's tut. ;)
