1: take full backup

2: get a more recent DVD from a torrent site, boot from it, select "upgrade" and install as normal.

As an FYI, there are essentially 4 "generations" of osx86: 10.4.1, 10.4.3, 10.4.4 -> 10.4.7(8), and 10.4.8 -> ?

10.4.1 and 10.4.3 were developer releases. 10.4.4 -7 used maxxuss'es 10.4.4 kernel, and the later versions use variously hacked kernels based on apples open xnu source.

whether you're likely to have more luck going through them all, or whether you could just get one of the current 10.4.9 DVDs & go for it, I don't know..
