Installing osx 10.4.1 using the deadmoo image (dd and so on...) was like a breeze compared to the problems of getting it installed on my laptop using the 10.4.3 install dvd.

I want to be able to install osx to a new partition alongside my existing WinXP partitions, so I looked around and found a few guides. I don't want to lose any of my existing partitions. I tried the following:

- freed 10gigs on my hd using partitionmagic

- created a 10gig primary partition

- using slax (usbstick linux) set the partition type to AF (cfdisk)

- booted the osx install DVD

- disk utility failed to repair this newly created AF partition, so I erased it and let diskutil create a new one in its place

However, when the target volume window appeared it said osx couldn't be installed because osx couldn't be booted from my newly created volume. I tried setting the AF partition to bootable (again in cfdisk) but the osx installer gave the same error...

What step am I missing here?

osx couldn't be installed because osx couldn't be booted from my newly created volume

Not well documented, but OSX 10.4.3 is particular about placement of type AF partition that it didn't create itself. There may be a 32 GB or 128GB limit to where it can boot. Try to make the OSX partition within 32 GB limit first and see if that works. If you've already done that, I don't know. B)

My hardware is compatible -- I erased the existing AF partition and let the disk utility create a new AF partition for me. Disk utility checked the partition and said it was OK...

When I had to choose a target partition for my osx installation, the newly created was visible but had a exclamation mark next to its icon and "osx can't be installed to this volume bacause it can't boot from it"
