MacMan2007
Installation from an IDE DVD-ROM Drive is finally supported using the latest JaS 10.4.8 OSX86 Installation DVD. Name of the iso is listed below. Torrent file came with the 10.4.9 combo update. Only had to install video and audio installation files to get the board fully functional with OSX86. Note when installing Vista and OSX, have just 1 hard drive hooked up. Make sure there are no USB flash drives connected, in order for this guide to work. JaS.10.4.9.Combo.Update.Intel.SSE3.pkg Titan.pkg MPIP103_10.4.9.SMB.CIFS.APF.FIX.dmg ALC883Audio.mpkg (1.1v) or ALC888Audio.mpkg (3.3v) Guide Chapter 1: Setting up drives on the motherboard 1. Set DVD-Rom drive jumper to master. 2. Connect an e-ide cable from the dvd-rom drive to the only IDE port on the motherboard. 3. Connect the SATA hard disk to the purple sata connector. Labeled GSATAII0. Chapter 2: Setting up the bios 1. Open Integrated Peripherals 2. Sata Port0-3 Native mode: Disabled (Maybe defaulted to this already) 3. Onboard SATA/IDE Ctrl Mode: IDE (Maybe defaulted to this already) 4. Go back to main menu, open Advanced BIOS Features 5. Change First boot device to Disable 6. Insert Windows Vista Installation DVD 7. Exit to main menu, click save and exit setup. 8. Hit F12 during posting to get to the boot menu. 9. Select CD-ROM Chapter 3: Installing Windows Vista 1. Choose Microsoft Windows Vista Setup (X86) 2. When everything finishes loading click Next. 3. Click Install now 4. Type in product key 6. Click Custom (advanced) 7. Click Drive Options 8. Delete all partitions, if there are more than one, delete all so theres only one drive option that says Unallocated 9. Select the unallocated space 10. Click New 11. This is important -> Write down this number on a piece of paper as this is the amount of space you have total. Then write down how much you want to assign for your Vista Partition. Replace the original number with the number that you want to assign (For example, if you have a 320gb harddrive, it will have a number around 304247, that means to say, 302 gigs. If you want to partition windows to be 30 gigs, you will type in 30000, write both the 304247 number down and 30000 number down on a piece of paper). (A Recommended Must > 20 gigs (For system restore to work, storage for temp files for burning DVD's, etc) 12. Leave the remaining space unallocated. 13. Choose the first partition 14. Click next 15. After installation, Windows Vista will restart and boot into Windows Vista. 16. Follow Setup Prompts 17. Click start, in the start search field type: run, then type: cmd. *After each step hit the enter key* 18. Type: DISKPART 19. Type: select disk 0 20. Now this is the part where you take the piece of paper where you wrote down those to numbers. Subtract the smaller number from the bigger number and subtract the total by 1. (For example: 304247 - 30000 = 274247 - 1 = 274246) 21. Type: create partition primary size=# id=af (# = the number you got from the step above) 22. Type: select partition 2 23. Type: active 24. Type: exit 25. Insert OSX Installation DVD into the DVD-ROM drive 26. Restart computer, and hit F12 to get to the boot menu. Select CD-ROM. Chapter 4: Installing OSX86 1. When Darwin bootloader starts, hit any key to start the installation. 2. Select Language 3. When next menu option pops up, "Install JaS 10.4.8 AMD INTEL SSE2 SSE3" wait for a couple more seconds until a menu part on the top appears. 4. Select Utilities 5. Select Disk Utility 6. There should be a partition named untitled and disk0s2 (or something similar). 7. Right click on disk0s2 (or something similar), click erase. 8. Name the harddrive: Macintosh HD 9. Click Erase 10. Click Erase again 11. Error might come up saying insufficient privileges, and go back to the erase prompt. 12. Rename again to: Macintosh HD 13. Click erase 14. Click erase again (Should work this time around) 15. Exit out of disk utility 16. Click continue 17. Click continue again 18. Place a check mark next to "JaS Intel 10.4.8 ATA kexts included†19. Click Install 20. When a prompt asks you if you want to skip this process, you can click skip to speed up the install process, it will not affect the installation. 21. After a restart, when you try to boot OSX86, you will get a HFS+ Partition Error. This is normal. Chapter 5: Fixing the HFS+ Partition Error 1. Boot from OSX86 Installation DVD 2. Hit F8 when it count downs *After each step hit the enter key* 3. Type: -s 4. Type: fdisk -e /dev/rdisk0 5. Type: flag 2 6. Type: Update 7. Type: write 8. Type: quit 9. Type: reboot 10. OSX should boot normally. Now you can setup OSX. Video drivers and audio drivers will be installed later. 11. Reboot the computer. Chapter 6.1: Setting up dual boot 1. Boot from the OSX86 Installation Disk again 2. Hit F8 when it count downs *After each step hit the enter key* 3. Type: s- 4. Type: fdisk -e /dev/rdisk0 5. Type: flag 1 6. Type: quit 7. Type reboot 8. Go into bios. 9. Eject the OSX Installation Disk. Insert the Windows Vista Installation DVD. Exit out of bios. 10. Boot from the Windows Vista Installation DVD 11. Doug the Impaler
Just wanted to let you know that this guide rocked. It foresaw every bad thing coming (like HFS+ errors and not erasing partitions correctly) and it got around them all. I actually don't have the Gigabyte board, but I have a similar one - ASUS P5B-Plus. Everything worked out of the box except, of course, the Attansic ethernet. I got around that with a Linksys LNE100TX v5 card and the tulip driver. I also used the uphuck 10.4.9 DVD rather than JaS, though if I'd failed, I'd have used the JaS 10.4.8 DVD since I have it too. Thank you so much for writing this. Now I can dual-boot Vista Home Premium and OS X without issue. vectran
Tried doing this about 4 times but keep getting 'Still waiting for root device'. Do I need to buy a SATA adapter as everyone else seems to think that? MacMan2007
Will this guide work with a GA-945GZM motherboard? How bout if I want to use 2 seperate sata disk drive? One of mac osx the other one for vista...is this possible?I used the same guide to install dual boot on my new motherboard ECS 945GCT-M... it should work the same for the board that you quoted. As for your second question, I have never tried installing this on 2 seperate sata disk drives. I don't think it will work, but you can try.You just have to manipulate some of the steps. However, you still have to install Vista first on one of the drives, and then OSX on the other drive. You can skip parts of the guide where you have to go to DISKPART.does it necesarilly need to be Vista or Could it be XP Pro?Yes this guide will only work if you are installing Windows Vista... Windows XP Pro does not use DISKPART as it is a Vista command application. HeyYoWL
I was actually thinking of booting Vista, OSX, & Ubuntu. Vista is already installed on C:\, and I really don't want to re-install everything. However, I'm getting a separate 80GB HDD that I'm going to use strictly for OSX & Ubuntu. Sorry to ask this of you if it's a complicated process, but what would I have to do differently if I wanted to make this setup work? Is it even possible to install Linux & OSX onto one HDD or are they just not compatible together? Conroe Mac
They work great together. The linux grub bootloader is one the best ways to boot multiple operating systems. HeyYoWL
That's good to hear, but what would I do differently? Or is all this extra work just because of Vista, and I can install Linux and OSX easily on a new HDD?
