I successfully installed the 10.4.1 deadmoo image in a dual-boot configuration with Windows on my Thinkpad T30, which is about three and a half years old. Here are the relevant specs on the machine:

Pentium 4 M, 1.8GHz (SSE2, no SSE3, PAE, no NX/XD)

ATI Mobility Radeon 7500

80gb 5400rpm hard drive (upgraded from factory-installed 40gb a few months ago)

512mb RAM

Intel "High-Rate Wireless LAN Mini-PCI Adapter with Modem II" (Prism chipset, supposedly works with orinoco_pci Linux driver)

External 1280x1024 monitor (dual-display runs fine in XP)

I created a 50gb FAT32 partition to share files between the two operating systems. Using Windows bootloader with chain0 file.

In general, OS X works fine. However, I would really like to have a graphics driver (of course!), especially if I could use it to spread my desktop across my external monitor. I haven't read about anyone having success with the Mobility Radeon 7500 yet, but I have yet to upgrade to 10.4.3, so I guess there is a small chance I could get it working then. And my wireless card doesn't work, no surprise there.

Boot parameters: "1024x768x32" set in the boot .plist

Other things I have done:

Used SharePoints to create Windows shares of several directories on my FAT32 partition. The program is great, though I did have to modify a few things in /etc/smb.conf that it wasn't setting correctly.

Been using Adium, Tomato Torrent, Mail, Safari, and iCal a lot, and all are very stable.

MS Office works fine, though it's a bit slow. Haven't used it much yet, so I'm not sure how stable it is.

I'm near the point where I can use OS X as my primary operating system, only booting into XP to run Matlab and a few other programs. Dual-monitor and wireless support would help that a lot. For now, I'm trying to make my OS X installation not interfere with my Windows installation. The shared FAT32 partition helps a lot with that, as does the fact that my IMAP mail can stay on the server until I archive it in Outlook.

I figure I'll wait until 8f1111 is patched to upgrade, though I have 8f1099 ready to go if I want to try.

Anyone else out there running a T30?

Thanx for your post..

i'm planing to install the OS x into my T43, and i'm worry about the wireless and the videocard drivers, it seem your T30 works fine, than i felt much better to go ahead for action..

thank you

What video card do you have?

You may get video driver support if you have the Intel GMA 900 graphics chip or the Radeon 9600 both these were options for the T43

  • 1 month later...

I'm running 8f1099 now, for one, with a Maxxuss patched installation DVD. No VMware or anything like that. Very simple - partition, format, pop in the DVD, and install!

Where during the installation does it kernel panic?

Several friends of mine have the same laptop and we have discovered some interesting properties of our T30s.

For one, only two of our four DVD drives can install successfully from the DVD-Rs we're using. I think I'll try a DVD+R later to see if it makes any difference. From my own drive, the installer would always stop with errors. Never an actual kernel panic, though. Perhaps your problem is related to your drive or your media.

jfn, you sound like me in my Windows heyday, always figuring something out to get anything to work despite the time it takes.

I haven't gotten my 8f1111 installed yet. Glad it's workin for ya.

You should try Azureus, it's a much better torrent prog than Tomato, and it looks sweet. It's Java based.

OSX 10.4.4 is my main OS. But IF I get this installed on my Dell, I may think about using that instead because it's got a faster processor, and the mouse control feels better on x86 machines for some reason, which for some reason is a big thing to me.

Can't anyone walk me through this step by step?

I'm seriously having some problems understanding this process.... everything I try in Terminal doesn't work, either I can't find the files I'm supposed to point to, or the syntax is wrong, or some step is skipped.

Are any of you people engineers who can provide a proper step by step? Or simply programmers who believe others have the same knowledge you do?

Can't anyone help....

Boy, you guys really suck don't you....

Thanks for all your responses people...I can see you can reply to silly posts arguing about whether someone misread their build version (10.4.5 debate)....but when it comes to a newbie having a problem, you're all simply too good for it...

:) you guys!

I just got back from vacation and only noticed your posts now. Don't talk to people on the forum like that.

That NIC probably won't work because most wireless cards don't, but check the Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) on the wiki to be sure.

It would help if you could give some specific problem you have or something that isn't working. Some commands that don't work when you type them into a terminal, for instance. "Everything I try in Terminal doesn't work" is unhelpful. It sounds like you *are* following a step by step process, but that there's something wrong with it, so tell us what parts don't work and we'll try to help you through them.
