cell-gfx
You can either use something like SuperDuper to create a bootable backup to a seperate HD, or you can use iBackup to backup individual elements of the OS. There's a good tutorial at Mac Apper that you can find here. (Note that as of the time of this post, MacApper was down!) Hope this helps. Cheers! XanthraX
For the system re-install, I use the MacOSX 10.4.3 (v. 1111) Install DVD. Is the single that permitting me the option "Archive and Install". Then I will remove the /Previous System folder and upgrade to 10.4.8 and 10.4.9. superkona
interesting, i will look for the 10.4.3 dvd. going with ibackup this time. since you mention 10.4.9 - what do you think the best method is for an intel pentium d805 system? CoolBits
When i reinstalled, i booted with 10.4.8 DVD then deleted /System and /Library folders in terminal... it would not allow me to install 10.4.8 over 10.4.9 otherwise... When installed i just type same username as i had before and it told me that this user folder already exists and if i want to use it...yes And voila new install with all progs and settings exactly same as before... XanthraX
That is more easy and cool. But, before that I think is better to backup the preferences from /Library. Thanks mate. CoolBits
Your preferences are stored in /Users/yourname/Library System prefs are reinstalled to /Library ... You can even make /Users folder on a different partition or disk and make symlink for it after fresh install... works no problem Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/48157-osx86-reinstall-guide/#findComment-349255 Share on other sites
superkona
ibackup worked like a charm, thanks! it did not save every last pref but 98% is not bad - growl, xchat & a few others - important stuff is all there though.
