I've read the wiki, used search, talked in IRC. This isn't a "WILL MY MOBO WORK PLZ HLP".

I have a few questions that I couldn't really find the answers to clearly, and wanted to answer them for myself and also so they're archived here.

#1: I understand that Dell architecture changes rapidly, etc, but are there any models that will run OS X pretty easily. Meaning without a million hacks and writing my own drivers. I work hard, all day, and don't really want the liability of building, but I will if I have to.

#2: Is basically any mobo supported RAM okay?

#3: As a general usability question, I've seen people saying in random places that "oh well this won't work with my xxxx". If I get a system that is up and running with all compliant parts, will it run like a normal Mac would? Or will certain things still be buggy? I'm confused on this point.

If I can get any help with that I'd appreciate it!

  1. Some user experiences here: HCL 10.4.8 Desktop: Dells, HCL 10.4.8 Portable: Dells.
  2. I don't know of any specific ram issues; others could give you more info.
  3. OSX is supposed to run only on Apple-supported hardware, but does in fact run on other, thanks to great hackers.
Don't expect a PCI Soundblaster card to work, for example; usually some onboard audio will work, or an alternative usb audio card. Check the Wiki's HCL components for some info. For example, until many months ago there was a so-so support for video cards in general; then came (for example) the macvidia project, and then the titan/natit solutions that allowed osx great support for many nvidia graphics cards.
You could have a very performant hackintosh, at least with 10.4.8-10.4.9.

Of course the above if far from being an exhaustive answer, but you might get more details/precise information from others.
