zapro Posted March 30, 2007 Share Posted March 30, 2007 Hello! I have a fine working 10.4.9 system up and running, but on a slow, temporary disk. I got myself a new harddrive now. It's low level formatted, so totally clean. First i used this guide to format the partition: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=37093 I set the partiton active, and it doesn't boot. If i boot from the Install DVD and do not press any buttons, it boots fine off the harddrive. it is working with either a fresh install of OSX or the old system moved by Carbon Copy Cloner. Booting directly to the disk gives me a blinking dash, nothing more happens. I have tried the advice to format the disk as one big FAT32 drive in windows via mkdosfs-program, and then, from the installer, "erase" the partition and make it Apple HFS as normally. i have done that, but it still doesn't boot after install! - just the blinking dash! What do i do wrong ? All the disks i am using is SATA. UPDATE: Problem solved! I followed this thread and patched my install ISO, now it works wonderfully!!! http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=38125 The image uses Titan instead of Natit, works much more stable. the problems i had, booting with no image, or slow boot is gone! errandwolfe Posted March 30, 2007 Share Posted March 30, 2007 If you are installing to a completely new hard drive here is how I would do it. 1. Do a fresh install of 10.4.8 to your new drive. 1a. Make sure when using Disk Utility from boot DVD that you select "Master Boot Record" as partition type. 2. Use the migration wizard to move all your data from the old to the new. 3. Upgrade to 10.4.9 That SHOULD be all that is involved if you have a fully supported SATA chipset. If it doesn't work you may want to provide more details on exactly what hardware you are running. I've done this before with some fiddling, just can't get it to work now! My machine is 100% supported - Bad Axe 2 with E6600 C2D. (Intel 975 Chipset) The copy made by Carbon Copy Cloner works, as i can boot it, if the boot is initiated by the DVD install media. something in the MBR is incorrect i suspect, but what ?! There is no Master Boot Record thing in my installerdisk.... im lost here. Disk utility says that the disk is using GUID partitioning scheme I'm using the Jas 10.4.8 SSE2/SSE3 install DVD // Per. Do a clean install to the new drive the same way as you did the old one -- volume name, user name, etc. -- (don't worry about your personalized settings and stuff). Shut down your machine. 3. OK, this is where it gets tricky: Set the new drive as Master and the old one as Slave. 4. Boot off the DVD, then start the Disk Utility. In the left pane, you should see two identical drives except for the reported disk size. 5.Click the restore button. You will see a Source and Destination window. 6. HERE'S WHERE IT GETS TRICKY: (Assuming that your moving to a larger drive, the master (new) drive should be at the top of the list in the left pane, and the other (old) slave drive should be second.) From the left pane, drag the second (old) disk from the left pane to the Source window, then drag the first (new larger) disk to the destination window, and click restore. Depending on the size of the disk, this could take a long time, so you might want to go pay bills or something while it's doing its thing. 7. When it's finally finished, shut down your machine and remove the old drive. Set the new drive to master or cable select, whichever your machine likes, reinstall the drive and boot up into your new, larger drive! It should be a perfect clone of your old drive complete with settings and everything. These instructions may vary slightly depending on the version your using, but always make sure you keep track of which is your old and new drives so that you don't wipe out your data in the process! blog Posted March 31, 2007 Share Posted March 31, 2007 I used Acronis True Image Home 10 to make a backup of my OS X install. It is very easy to use and gives you the ability to choose the MBR in the process. It works excellent. I can now recover my OS X install to any clean hard drive at any time. If I screw up my OS X install it only take less than 10 min to recover. Sort of like Norton Ghost. Check it out if haven't already solved your problem. BTW you need to run it in windows. Cool you are having the same problem like I do, I been trying to get my back up image to boot for the last 3 days now, and still reading and trying, the reason is I want to able to keep my original install OS in good shape, and want the backup to play around. I see you have the same Intel Board as I do, and I think my processor is the 2.13 core 2 duoe, hey how did you get your onboard sound to work or you didn't yet? I still could get the sound to work yet! and My Ati 1950 pro is not woking neather just the resulition chang that all! let me know if you able to get your drive boot able, because am doing again right now! So I just use my Laptop to check the web for more help!!! I'm using SATA, there's no Master or Slave. i can tell the drives apart from their size (100 versus 250 GB) Will try your method, although i'm soon pretty convinced that the BadAxe2 motherboard is incompatible with my installer! // Per. It's a bit of a drag that it only makes the new partition the same size as the old one though. I had my OS X originally installed on a old 30 gig IDE hard drive. I wanted to move it to a new larger SATA drive and True Image worked but thus the size limitation and the inability to merge the partitions. I just made a new separate partition along with the OS X partition and fomated it in OS X to use for data and other programs that OS X will allow to be installed there.
