TorqueX86
Hello everyone. I purchased the board in the topic for the impressive array of features it has. Chipset is Intel G965 and ICH8 I use some DDR2800 from Geil, very aggressive timings, but the board doesn't seem to like them... how come? Doesn't even boot, and if it does, tends to lock down in a few minutes. Needless to say, my memory works perfect with my actual mobo, a cheapass Asrock. So, this is the first problem... Has anyone any experience about that!? Second problem, I just moved the HD from my previous and perfectly (save speedstep and sleep support) rig to the new one, and OSX locks in the grey screen with th apple, with a "do not trespass" logo suddently appear. How do I fix that? And what the hell is wrong with the memories, will a bios update fix it? Thanks, I really wouldnt want to give back the board, I like it... breakbot
I have this motherboard and it's very picky. It is because it can only output a max of 1.95v though the ram. The default is 1.8v, try upping it in the bios to 1.95v if you haven't already. The first I bought was rated at 2.0-2.1v and would only work with one stick of 1024mb in, set to 533mhz in the bios. I sent that back and got some Corsair Twin2X2048-6400C4 sticks instead. This is rated at 1.8v and runs at the right speed. It will even overclock a little. Good luck Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/46907-asus-p5b-vm-upgrade-and-problems/#findComment-335897 Share on other sites

I get a "do not trespass" logo whilst booting... Any clue? breakbot
Don't know about any volt mod, sorry. I've only just built this system, so not had much time to play. I managed to get OSX installed through VMWare, but have not yet managed a full native boot. I get halfway through and it just hangs. Will update here with progress though. breakbot
Finally managed to get OS X installed. Had to switch from IDE to SATA drive and format the whole drive in Diskutils first. My main problem is that my two SATA drives are incorrectly recognised as 128gb. They are both attached to the ICH8 controller, I guess I'm missing the correct driver. After I fix that, I will look to getting sound working... breakbot
Think I've PM'ed everyone who asked for help with this board. Anyone got any problems still with their installation? Tried to upgrade to the 10.4.9 kernel, but couldn't get it to boot. Fed up with no support for the onboard graphics also, so I gone ahead and ordered a 7600GT for the QE and Ci goodness.. collit99
yup success here, done it via VMWARE to Native! Thanks again breakbot! the only problem is the NIC it's intel 82566DM gigabit, coz mine is an Asus P5B-VM DO, but heck i'll buy a compatible NIC for this... About 10.4.9... Does it mean there's no workaround yet for 10.4.9 update on this board? BTW, are there specific BIOS settings I need to consider when installing/running OSX 10.4.8 on this? Do I need to disable some settings (VT, C1E, etc) perhaps? breakbot
Could those be related to using the 4 sticks of ram? I know others have had problems with anything over 3GB. edmoncu
thanks breakbot for the advise. anyhow, i will try to make further tests and see what will come up... hopefully the stability will go away as it's frustrating that i've replaced boards just for stability's sake Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/46907-asus-p5b-vm-upgrade-and-problems/#findComment-363163 Share on other sites
edmoncu
Could those be related to using the 4 sticks of ram? I know others have had problems with anything over 3GB. quoting your PM also on how you were able to install OSX Try this: I used a 10.4.8 iso which I downloaded from demonoid: JaS.Mac.OS.X.10.4.8.AMD.Intel.SSE2.SSE3.PPF.1.Defiant.diskutil.biker880.ich7-R.patch.Integrated.iso I had to do it in VMWare, becuase I did not have a sata dvd drive and the dvd drive connected to the JMicron Pata controller is not recognised during install. If you do it in VMWare there are plenty of guides on the forum. After installation I used the following: http://www.sabrsoft.com/randomstuff/ds3-4pack.1.2.dmg and selected the following to install: Azalia Audio fix Jmicro SATA/IDE fix 10.4.8 USB driver (IOUSBFamily-261.4.2) Jas 10.4.8 ICH8 Make the following changes to the files below: In AppleAzaliaAudio.kext/Contents/info.plist <key>Realtek ALC880/ALC860 Codec Driver</key> <dict> <key>CFBundleIdentifier</key> <string>com.apple.driver.AppleAzaliaAudio</string> <key>IOClass</key> <string>AppleAzaliaAudioCodecALC880</string> <key>IOHDAudioCodecVendorID</key> <string>0x11d41988</string> <key>IOProbeScore</key> <integer>10000</integer> <key>IOProviderClass</key> <string>IOHDAudioCodecDevice</string> </dict> In AppleAzaliaAudio.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleAzaliaController.kext/Contents/info.plist <key>Intel ICH6 Azalia Audio</key> <dict> <key>CFBundleIdentifier</key> <string>com.apple.driver.AppleAzaliaController</string> <key>IOClass</key> <string>AppleAzaliaController</string> <key>IOPCIPrimaryMatch</key> <string>0x284b8086 0x26688086</string> <key>IOProviderClass</key> <string>IOPCIDevice</string> </dict> For Sata disk to be recognised: Modify AppleAHCIPort.kext/Contents/info.plist <key>ICH8 AHCI</key> <dict> <key>CFBundleIdentifier</key> <string>com.apple.driver.AppleAHCIPort</string> <key>Chipset Name</key> <string>ICH8 AHCI</string> <key>IOClass</key> <string>AppleAHCI</string> <key>IOPCIPrimaryMatch</key> <string>0x28248086 0x28208086 0x28258086</string> <key>IOProbeScore</key> <integer>2000</integer> <key>IOProviderClass</key> <string>IOPCIDevice</string> <key>Vendor Name</key> <string>Intel</string> </dict> Modify AppleVIAATA.kext/Contents/info.plist <key>VIA SATA Controller</key> <dict> <key>CFBundleIdentifier</key> <string>com.apple.driver.AppleVIAATA</string> <key>Hardware Name</key> <string>8237 SATA</string> <key>IOClass</key> <string>AppleVIAATARoot</string> <key>IOPCIPrimaryMatch</key> <string>0x2363197B 0x28208086 0x28258086</string> <key>IOProbeScore</key> <string>1000</string> <key>IOProviderClass</key> <string>IOPCIDevice</string> <key>Serial ATA</key> <true/> </dict> Copy AppleVIAATA.kext and AppleAHCIPort.kext to IOATAFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/ Repair all permissions and reboot after that, i have a problem with using both the USB keyboard and mouse. just to confirm you told me to install these via the DS3-4 pack. this screenshot is done under vmware still. during installation i got this error. edit: anyhow, resolved the above issue by not including the USB driver. however, i have another question... do i have to restart after this or just continue with the rest of the steps and restart once done? Doug the Impaler
Does this allow use of all four ICH8 SATA ports on the P5B-VM? I have a problem where if I have something plugged into ports 3 and 4, they're not seen, just ports 1 and 2. Also, with regards to 128GB being seen, my first attempt at installing was on a 120GB hard drive. I'm going to re-install and put Windows and OS X on the same drive, which is a 250GB - if I set the SATA ports to Enhanced (which I assume to be AHCI), will the disk utility see the entire drive? I'm hoping so; I just want to split the hard drive right down the middle so that I have half for Windows and half for OS X. If nobody knows, I guess I'll be finding out this weekend. Doug the Impaler
That's totally awesome. Now if I could just get USB ports 7-10 to work (have a header bracket for 4 of the 6 that aren't on the backplane, and the ohter two on the front of the case. I have the front ones working because they're plugged into 5-6, but the bracket only works in Windows). breakbot
Success upgrading to 10.4.9 using apple updater and this how-to http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?s=&...st&p=322971. I also copied from a backup folder the System.kext because .dmg files could not be mounted after the update. System is stable now, so going to clone it to a backup partition for safety. Now I've installed a 7600GT and got QE and CI, I'm using this as my main OS, its much nicer than Vista (also p2p is much faster!).
