I've got an older G4 12" ibook 800mhz that the logic board has crapped out on it. I've been looking around and have seen some newer boards available (used of course) and wondered if the board is screwed, upgrade! if I get another 12" G4 ibook logic board does it matter if the cpu is a newer faster or were there size differences or can they not be interchanged like that?? THANKS!!!!

"Here's a take apart on the G4 12':

If you read far down into the procedure you'll find that the 800 and

the 1/1.2 seem to be different. The first thing is the heat sink is

different and the logic boards are most certainly mounted different.

As to the 800 MHz board you can try applying pressure to the top board

where the GPU chip is. You can see it here:

http://www.ifixit.com/cart/customer/....php?p=PBF8312

I think it's the large chip next to the one with the blue heat xfer

foam on it. It has an "A" shaped symbol on it.

When it's installed it would be under the flex to the HD.

It seems you could do this with the top case and shield off. You might

be able to put pressure on it by carefully studing the take apart. It

seems like its the last item on the heat sink/spreader unit. If you

can correct or make the problem better by doing this you could send

the logic board for reballing at:

http://www.superiorreball.com/

It would cost $78 return shipping included."

it seems as though they are not interchangeable unfortunately. if this is incorrect please post a reply!

Hi,

It's spudnuty. Aside from the problem with the solder separation problem noted on AppleFritter I've become aware of a failure of the ATI Mocility Radeon 9200 chip itself. If none of the applying pressure techniques noted here and elsewher will help your problem. ie if the screen is completely black then you have a high probabliity that your chip itself has died.

Google the chip and note now many failures of that chip have occured even in chips that were mounted on seperate boards.

thanks spudnuty and welcome to the forum! I was actually attempting to buy 'bad' hardware off ebay and piece together an ibook out of those parts for a lower cost than buying one used. I never ended up doing though mainly because I wanted to keep the $$ in hand until the next gen of macbooks comes out hopefully with the release of leopard. Then I'll just buy one of those. thanks for that info though it pretty much confirms that i won't do this repair.

Well I've had better luck on the local Craig's List here in Chicago and from tech contacts that I have.

I have a 14" G3 700 that was in a 95MPH car crash I got for free. LCD smashed, frame bent, combo drive bent bad. I replaced the screen for $150 and it worked fine for ~ 1.4 years. It was showing the GPU seperation symptoms. Finally that popped. I had it reballed for $78 at Superior. Dale there was great. It's been working fine for 4 months now.

I got a 15.1" G4 500 Titanium PowerBook for $100 since it wouldn't boot. I finally figured out it had a PMU battery. So I checked it and it was 70% gone. Replaced it with one from OWC for ~ $20. Now it now works great. I'm working on the terrible Airport Range problem on these Titaniums.

A 12" G4 1.2 GB iBook with the GPU problem $150. That's the one that Dale told me had the 9200 chip in it after the reball. It's dead dead. Now I'm looking for an chip for that one on another iBook or other laptop that uses that GPU.

I've found that eBays stuff gets bid out of sight. Esp G4 iBooks and Powerbooks. So I stick to Craig's. Since I'm near Chicago there are quite a few available. It's a great advantage to be able to see the machine and do a diagnostic on it.
