I recently cloned my osx partition to a new drive, for that i had to format it HFS+. Let me tell you that i had massive problems with the diskutility built in into osx (booted OSX), i just didn't work out, problems all the time. The solution: Boot your install DVD and use the diskutility there, im sure it will work.

I used a windows install cd, booted into Recorvery mode, formatted the drive NTFS then ran FIXMBR and rebooted using OS X dvd then I formatted the PARTITION (not the drive) to HFS+, made it an active partition using fdisk and it worked like a dream.

Beats the 10.4.8 disk util which doesn't correctly create the MBR.
