I've got an IBM Thinkpad T40 at my disposal. I"ve installed Jas OSX 10.4.8 with SSE2/SSE3 & 8.8.1 patched. The installation works, however when booting up, it displays the Grey Apple logo with the spinning Busy Icon and then the screen Goes Black and sits there.. As though it's loaded up the desktop, however I can't see it. I suspect maybe a video driver issue but do not have the faintest idea on how to troubleshoot.

My System Specs are:

IBM Thinkpad T40

Video - Radeon Mobility M7 (AGP)

Audio - AC97

CPU - Intel Pentium ® M 1.5mhz

Nic - Intell Ether Pro 100/1000 & Wireless 2100b

I also have at my disposal is an IBM T60. That installs fine and video works great but No Sound or Wireless support yet on that model.

I have an older DVD that has OSx 10.4.5 and that one works fine on the T40. However everything I've tried to update that one to 10.4.8 always results in failure.

Would appreciate any help you may have.

Thanks!

Cool. I found the pack but not sure how you enter Safemode..

Thanks!

dysan911:

try booting it into safe mode and then installing the radeon 7500 pack (can be found on genius bar@video problems sticky thread)

Well, okay I found the Driver pack that's a DMG File.. and figured out how to use Safemode which is using the -x right? If so all that does is takes you through a reinstall. No way to mount and install the .DMG file.

Okay, so Safemode boots up to bank video as well. SO much for that..

I'm wondering if its because of the ATI card that we're having issues.

I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 with a 1.7 Ghz Pentium M and an ATI 9600 128mb Mobility Radeon.

I checked all the boxes to make sure I install everything just in case. The installation runs smoothly. However, upon rebooting the Apple logo will show up and the circle will rotate. However, my screen then goes blank grey and stays there no matter how long I sit there or the keys I press.

I have no idea what the issue maybe.

Did you install using the JAs 10.4.8 DVD? If you did don't install anything that has to do with video drivers. Or you will get a blank screen on your video cards. those drivers are only for x1000 series cards.

I tried various install options.. One time without checking the ATI/Nvida Support and I get the exact same results. It was the Jas 10.4.8 dvd. The name of the DVD to be exact was:

JaS.Mac.OS.X.10.4.8.AMD.Intel.SSE2.SSE3.PPF.1.Defiant.diskutil.biker880.ich7-R.patch.Integrated

Is there a newer or more compatible Distribution of 10.4.8?

Dysan, I tried every installation variant I could think of and I still got the blank screen everytime. I've tried both the 10.4.7 and 10.4.8 DVD's and I still have the same issue. Both those DVD's worked on my desktop computer but it's just this laptop that's having the problem. Curious.

i am having the same issue right now. i have no idea into how to install the x300 drivers....

Sorry to post to this old thread, but are there any news concerning the grey screen? I also want to try to install OS X 10.4.8 on my DELL Inspiron 8600.

Would be interested in how to fix it.

I too am having this exact problem with an X800 graphics card. It worked fine in 10.4.5. I too am using the same JaS 10.4.8 DVD. I guess I'll start downloading a new DVD even though I assume there is some sort of solution. I just can't find it.

If anyone has any ideas please! HELPP.. I'll bookmark this thread and post my results if I find any.

I hope this isn't the problem we're having. I choose specifically SSE3 and AMD for my AMD 3200+ Vincent chipset. I think I may have choose X1000 patch because I was planning on getting one very soon, but I think that's why mine is failing. This time around I only choose the Canon drivers, no translations, no extra fonts, no intel, no SSE2, X11, and I believe that's it.

Maybe this will help. I have about 45 minutes left on this install so I'll see if that fixes it.

Edit: Sweet. I reinstalled with ONLY the exact things I needed and it worked. (Read above)
