Hi everyone :(

Just spent the weekend getting my new OSx86 set up on my PC using JaS 10.4.7. I love it, but I have some issues, and was wondering if you'all could help me out.

Dell Dimension 4600

Intel Pentium 4 SSE2

2.5 GB RAM

1. Screensaver issues- locks up

2. Can't use filesharing

3. Itunes 7 - used workaround with PPL file, but would like to use Itunes 7 native

4. Would like to use iLife suite

I've done some research around the boards all day, and was wondering: Will updating the kernel and using 10.4.8 solve all my issues? I was thinking of using Paulicat method and the hippiex Semthex kernel install script. Should I just settle on the 10.4.7 or make the switch? Also, will my performance suffer from the upgrade?

Thanks in advance for any help!! Love the boards here- special thanks to JaS and Semthex, and everyone here in the community!!

Update #1: Installed the 10.4.7 fix for networks, and now file sharing works!

Is there anyone who can help with the other issues? With so many different ideas about patches, installs, etc, it is hard to figure out what method would be best if I were to upgrade. I would like to use different screen resolutions, Itunes 7, iLife 06.

Thanks in advance! I'll keep checking this thread. :(

A fresh 10.4.8 installation at least can solve the Problem 3. For Problem 1 and 4, I think you need to enable OpenGL, QE and CI.

Bruce

Thanks Bruce! Do you know if the patches for OpenGL, QE and CI come with this release, or do I have to get them elsewhere? Also, does this come with the latest kernel?

UPDATE #3:

I have A WORKING 10.4.8 MAC :) with the latest kernel!!

I installed the new 10.4.8 (version above) and solved all my issues by installing the GeForce 5200 patch! I also got a Mac driver for my Ozone USB keyboard/audio card, so I've got sound, graphics, network, sharing, and everything I need.

Now to uninstall XP or not... :P:whistle:

Thanks to everyone who made this possible- a journey that took me from Friday night till 11PM EST tonight to finally get through. If anyone needs help with anythiing, I'd be glad to pass on my knowledge from all of the trial and error I went through- it's funny when you start out you need tutorials with screen shots but after the (eleventh?) time through the install process you're an old pro...

DELL 4600

Intel Pentium 4 SSE2

GeForce 5200

2.5gb RAM

OSX 10.4.8

8.8.1 kernel

THANK YOU BRUCE for keeping me going- and to all of you who are thinking of giving up after getting a good 10.4.7 going, make the update- there are definite benefits- the OS seems to be running very smoothly on my machine- better than XP for sure.

Always wanted a mac, but couldn't afford one. (Saving up for a ultraportable multitouch enabled 12" MacBook Pro when they come out...) ;)
