nekton
Could someone point me to a clear description of the relationship between these three standards. In particular, I am unclear why 1080i HD has any relationship at all to the PAL and NTSC SD standards. Surely, if I have a 1080i capable TV in any country in the world, I can shoot at 1080i on my Sony Z1 or A1, etc., and the 1080i HD footage can be played back on the TV in 1080i HD. In addition, can I shoot in 1080i and them import (down convert) into FCP Studio as either PAL or NTSC for burning to disc and playback on an SD TV either in Europe (PAL) or the USA or Japan (NTSC) as examples. If this is true, what is the purpose of Sony and the other makers of prosumer cameras keeping describing their models as PAL or NTSC even though they support 1080i? Is it just to re-assure SD TV owners in various countries that the camera matches the country's old SD standard? l guess part of what I am trying to ask is whether 1080i shot on an NTSC A1J bought in Japan will play perfectly well on a 1080i HD TV in the UK for example where the SD standard is PAL. And will the worldwide adoption of 1080i cameras coupled with the spread of 1080i capable TVs render the old PAL and NTSC SD standards irrelevant? Confused in Tokyo. riktor
From what I understand is the 1080i HD NTSC is 60Hz and PAL is 50Hz... so that might create a problem. 720p is supposed to be more universal. As far as down converting, I believe you can do it in FCP.
