Hello,

I've spent the last few hours reading a lot about OSx86 on the site, as well as through thr forum. The path to switching to OSx86 looks very good. Before I take on this path, I'd like to ask a few questions.

Basically I would like to know which system would be recommended to install OSx86 on. It's would be great to hear answers coming from this forum of very knoweldgable people to help me decide. Once the decision is made, I do plan to contribue to the Hardware Compatibility list, hopefully helping others)

System #1:

Processor: Intel Pentim 4, 3.0 GHz Hyper-Threading, LGA 775 Processor

Motherboard: Abit AB9 Pro Motherboard (Intel 965 Chipset)

Memory: 2 gb Corsair XMS2 DDR2-800 (PC6400) Memory

Video Card: Sapphire ATi Radeon x700 Pro Series (256 mb memory) PCI-e 16x

Sound Card: Creative X-Fi Fatal1ty PCI Soundcard (I understand there may not be a soundcard compatibility, which is fine.)

Hard Drive(s): 6 x 250 gb Maxtor DiamondMax Plus Sata Hard Drives (will OSx86 read my hard drives, since they're sata)

Optical Drive(s): Lite-On 20x Combo Lightscribe DVD-RW/CD-RW Drive

Lite-On 52x DVD-Rom/CD-Rom Drive

Network Adapters: Abit AirPace Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11b/g PCI-express Adapter (PCI 1x)

Peripherals: USB Keyboard (Enermax Aurora Aluminum Keyboard

USB Mouse (Logitech MX Revolution Wireless Mouse)

Masscool USB/Firewire PCI Card Model MT1394A+ U2, VIA chipset (I believe, I am not sure,

or...

System #2:

Processor: Intel Pentim 4, 2.8 GHz Hyper-Threading, Socket 478 Processor

Motherboard: Abit IC7-G Motherboard (Intel 875 Chipset)

Memory: 1 gb Kingston HyperX DDR-400 (PC3200) Memory

Video Card: ATi Radeon x9600 Pro Series (128 mb memory) AGP 8x

Sound Card: Creative Audigy 2 PCI Soundcard

Hard Drive(s): 80 gb IDE Seagate Barracuda 7200 rpm HD

160 gb IDE Western Digital Caviar HD

Optical Drive(s): LG/Hitachi 48x DVD-Rom/CD-RW Drive

Lite-On 52x CD-RW/CD-Rom Drive

Network Adapters: Linksys WMP54g PCI Wireless Adapter

Peripherals: USB Keyboard + USB Mouse

- I currently use an Apple 17" iMac and plan to transfer all my files to the future OSx86 system, will this be possible?

- I depend on a wireless network in my home. I am currently using the Apple Airport Base Extreme 802.11b/g/n. How does wireless work with OSx86? Will my wireless network adapters, above, work?

- Will OSx86 detect my optical drives, and how well does burning DVDs and CDs do?

- With the iMac, I predominately used such programs as: the adobe creative suite 2 (photoshop, illustrator, indesign, etc..), final cut studio suite, as well as macromedia (now adobe) dreamweaver, fireworks, flash, various audio compression programs. How will the performance in using these programs be on these systems?

- Are there any precautions before installing? Will I need to install other components prior to install OSx86? (Do i basically just put the DVD in my drive and boot from it?)

- Just out of curiosity, how well do SATA Optical drives work with OSx86? I plan to purchase a drive in the near future.

-Do you this OSx86 10.4.8 will be stable enough to be used as the primary system for all my work?

I am basically interested in your responses, getting to know the software more.

Thanks so much for your time, I truly do appreciate your time in reading this.

I can't wait!, I'm quite excited for this! :thumbsup_anim:

Well... for one, you should check out the wiki and see how much of your stuff is supported.

AFAIK, though, Creative sound cards don't work at all.

Also, a wireless card seems like a terrible waste of a PCI-e slot. Is your video card PCI-e, too? If so, make sure your mobo has two PCI-express slots, or you're screwed :thumbsup_anim:

The latest OSx86 DVDs are able to detect SATA, so you shouldn't have a problem with that. As far as keyboard/mouse goes: As long as both kb AND mouse are the same interface (both have to be PS/2 or USB), then you're probably fine.

I actually did check off everything, and I'd have to say, a lot of my stuff aren't on there yet. I saw about two hardware that was on there and it was ok'd. Which system would you choose?

How unfortunate, but I guess it's okay, I'll put the creative on the pc (i'll be switching back and forth using the same monitor.)

I forgot to add the extra details, the motherboard basically has (1) PCI-e 16x slot (for the video card), (2) PCI-e 1x slot (the wireless adapter is using one of them), (2) PCI slots (the USB/Firewire Adapter is using one, and the creative sound card for the other, but i'll probably take it out anyway)

good to know! I have the 10.4.8 installation right now, but have not installed it yet. Just wanted to know your opinion/suggestions/feedback, etc...I'm so glad I don't have to go through the trouble of getting a SATA to IDE adapter for that. what a relief.

Both Keyboard and Mouse are USB. Thanks for answering my question

Thanks so much for your reply, I appreciate it! :thumbsup_anim:
