hambone
I thought it would be neat to throw a "Hackintosh" drive into my system this weekend. Install went OK, system booted with sound, video seeming to work fine. Neat! Then my system overheated. In fact, I was surprised to find out that my motherboard (ASUS A8V Deluxe) actually TALKS to me when the CPU is too hot. I've been running this system for a year and a half and it's never overheated. When I restarted the computer after it automatically shut down, it was over 200 degrees F! The computer is not overclocked in any way. I am aware that OS X is not reporting my CPU frequency in the "About This Mac" section correctly and is not overclocking my system. However, it seems that it IS causing it to overheat... the system crashes because it is too hot within 15 minutes of booting OS X. I can replicate this. In another post I've read on this forum, a user theorized that OS X didn't know how to run the fans on his system. That sounded reasonable to me, so I tried fiddling with the ACPI drivers in the way he suggested, but it didn't solve the problem. Sorry, I can't seem to find the post right now. I'll append it if I find it again. Specs: OS X 10.4.8 "Tubgirl" release Asus A8V Deluxe Athlon 64 X2 3800+ SATA 160 GB HD (Linux) PATA 40 GB HD (OS X) GeForce 6600 Any ideas? I'm likely making a hackintosh "newbie" mistake, so just pont me in the right direction. aberracus
connect all your fans directly to the power lines of your PSU.. that wil solve the problem, i personally use an external fan c ontroller to control airflow in my system, i used that kind of front panel controllers since windows xp good luck Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/43475-os-x-overheats-my-sysem/#findComment-310729 Share on other sites
hambone
Is that safe for my CPU fan? I don't think I have an adapter that goes from a 3 pin fan to... anything that come out of my PSU. macbrush
That's strange, because all motherboards I have used control fans directly from BIOS. The system doesn't need to know anything about it. I might be wrong though. hambone
Well, I'm not married to the theory. It was just posited by "some guy" after all. Here is what I know for sure: -- In Ubuntu, my system has never shutdown because it was too hot. However, I don't pay attention to sensor data, I don't overclock my system and I don't know/care about any of that stuff. In fact, I don't even know how hot these newfangled computers are supposed to run :-). -- When I boot OS X, about 15 minutes later my computer suddenly shuts off. When I restart, after POST a tinny woman's voice complains that my CPU temperature is too high. What a corny feature. So, I sure don't mind exploring other avenues, here. How hot should my computer *normally* be? What should I be watching/comparing between running Ubuntu (i.e. normal operation) and OS X? Are there OS X temperature sensors that work for my CPU/Motherboard combo? Is Santa Clause real? Thanks! macbrush
How about run Activity Monitor as soon as you're logged in? You can then tell how much CPU the OS is consuming at idle, and who the consumer is.
