apal07
Hey there. I was just wondering if its possible to run two video cards in my PC and use my main PCI-E slot X1 for windows and the 2nd slot for my mac. Only reason is I'm aware that there is no support at all for the 8800gts and instead of building another system or downgrading my card wondering if i can run one in the 2nd slot and use that to boot up with the mac??? If i can, how do i go about doing this ? can i just plug it in and it would work? has anyone tried this? Could something like this damage the motherboard somehow ? I have a GIGABYTE 965P dq6. Previously had a 7900 GT running in the machine so i would assume if this idea works i could prob just grab a 7300 gt or 7600 Thanks heaps in advanced. enb14
First a 16x video card can't be plugged into a 1x or 4x slot, so you will need a PCIe 1x in order to do that or at least to have a motherboard with two PCIe 16x or 8x (16x sized) Second you will have to set on the BIOS which video card to start with, if your bios doesn't has that option that could be another problem. nargot
you will have the option to select either the 1st or second pcie slot somewhere in the bios however, your machine may not boot into osx when two cards are installed regardless of bios settings (can't do it on a ga-965P-DQ6 mobo) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/43103-is-it-possible-to-run-2-different-pci-e-cards-at-once/#findComment-308681 Share on other sites
joe75
The first slot closest to the cpu would be the primary. You could try a supported card in the first slot and only add the dev id for that card. It may not work, but there's only one way to find out. apal07
Hey guys, i tried chucking in both cards and playing around with settings but i had no luck. like the guy said previously i dont think i can do anything with my mobo. My last option is building a new pc and forkin out 700 bucks just so i can run my mac something i really dont want to have to do. Or we could all just wait until something gets created for the 8800 cards i guess. But i assume we would have to reformat or wait for a new release osx with support. Other people might have luck with the two video cards. I do remeber my last pc which had a ASUS mobo pb5 deluxe i think. That had the option about pci-e switching and stuff. So i guess ppl can still give it a go.
