Chrisp7
Hi everyone, I'm new here:) Really looking forward to getting mac on my new build PC! I have been trying to select components that are compatible with OSx86 and I heard that Osx86 had issues with SATA drives? Am I right to get an IDE Hard drive? (For system drive) And the DVD drive, are there issues with SATA? I am looking to get this: Samsung SH-S183A SATA Or is it wise for me just to get a PATA drive? Thanks for your help:) Chris ps the Mother board is: Conroe945G-DVI Edited February 16, 2007 by Chrisp7 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/42635-sataide-hard-diskdvd/ Share on other sites
Chrisp7
Maybe I should simplify the question - are there issues with OSx86 for SATA drives? (DVD and Hard disk) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/42635-sataide-hard-diskdvd/#findComment-304957 Share on other sites
Schwinn555
Different motherboards have different issues(and a few have few or no issues) with hardware. There are at least several threads on the motherboard you chose. I'm guessing that it's Asrock brand from the name? Perhaps the info your looking for is in one of those threads. My Asus P5L-MX motherboard works fine with both SATA and ATA(ide) drives. But that likely means nothing reguarding yours . The correct setings in bios can often make all the difference. It's not always clear what the correct setting is. I switched mine to IDE because I only had ide drives at the time . All sorts of odd booting and install problems occured. Turns out that with my board the default setting of "S-ATA" drives is the correct one for either SATA or IDE. It wasn't clear at all because it offers IDE, S-ATA and IDE/SATA combo choices. The info was however in the manual and who reads that ;-) I've read the threads on the Asrock board a while back and it sounds like a good choice. I'm happy with mine as well. Install is straight forword. I have to do a seperate but easy software install for audio and need to use a PCI or PCI-E Ethernet card as the on board doesn't work with Mac (but there is a guy here working on it). I've read threads with the Samsung DVD drives not booting on the Mac. They were likely ide but some have gotten them to work. SATA DVD drives are still pretty new so not a lot of info on them.It would be nice to not have to deal with ide cables especailly if your case is smaller.Perhaps someone else will answer who knows about sata DVD drives. . Pioneer DVD drives are always a safe bet as Apple has used them for years. My Pioneer 111D DVD-RW ide is seen as Apple Superdrive fully supported and they are cheap these days. newegg.com and other places have them for around $30.00 shipped sometimes. The Pioneer 112 is now out and a bit faster not sure if it's fully supported or not. I'm guessing it will work fine. Best of luck with your new project. I plan on making my HacIntosh my main machine soon. Chrisp7
Wow, Insanely good and detailed answer thanks so much, its a real help:) In that case I will go for a Pioneer DVDRW, since they are all much of a muchness anyway. And I have and IDE and SATA HD's so will be able to try both. Sound like everything should be compatible - I am excited - cheers for all the help and effort. ps yes my board is Asrock.
