Rapishorrid
I am getting ready to do an installation of OS X 10.4.8 (JaS.10.4.8.AMD.Intel.SSE2.SSE3) for the first time and have a few questions. First of here are my computer specs just for reference: AMD 64 3200+ Socket 939 (Venice) Nvidia 6800gs PCI-Express 1gb Corsair Value Select MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum I am planning on installing OS X on a completely blank harddrive so I would end up with one harddrive devoted to WinXP and a second harddrive for OS X. I'd be doing this mainly to make sure my WinXP installation and all files I have on it don't get touched in anyway, and secondly to avoid the trouble of partitioning. Is this a good idea? My second question is what should I expect with the OS X installation? Is it actually worth it - will it run decent without too many problems? I plan on doing a lot of designing with it (music, graphics etc.). Anyway just looking for some helpful input and possibly a link to a guide for installing on a seperate HD (I'm planning on using this http://www.profit42.com/index.php/2007/02/...lamd-computer/. :pirate2: Edited February 14, 2007 by Rapishorrid Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/42372-os-x-installation-questions/ Share on other sites
Forceman
1. Yes use a second hard drive, it's the best idea then you can select which one to boot off. 2. Unless someone has the same hardware we cannot tell you how it's going to go, just do it and if you dont like OS X then only a bit of time lost. OS X took about ten minutes for me so it's not a issue, I found tubgirl 10.4.8 AMD worked better for me. Installation is as simple as any other OS if not more so. Rapishorrid
Well since I am already almost done downloading JaS.10.4.8 I figure I'll try that first. Thanks for the advice and help though, this should be an interesting experiment for my school vacation. :pirate2: Also is there a list of the specific packages that should be installed during the customize portion of the setup? Or is it relatively straightforward just according to AMD or Intel and SSE2 vs SSE3? Forceman
Yes just install what you need, it's pretty straight forward. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/42372-os-x-installation-questions/#findComment-302902 Share on other sites
Rapishorrid
Well that was a failure! I installed without problems but when it came to reboot there was some kind of issue. I hit restart now and the it went to a black screen with some white text. Something about "killed" "done" and the last line was "MACH reboot". I let it sit for about 15 minutes and then losing my patience restarted the computer. To my delight it wouldn't get past the motherboards logo, meaning I could not even get into the BIOS. So here I am back on my windows HD. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/42372-os-x-installation-questions/#findComment-303187 Share on other sites
Forceman
Sounds like it just didnot restart, thats a common issue with ACPI problems, just hit the reset button. Rapishorrid
Well I did but it just kept sitting at the mobo logo each time. The only way I could actually get to even the BIOS was by hooking up my windows HD (without the OSX one). Could it be something to do with the harddrive because it was originally NTFS with windows on it. I went to the OS X disc utility selected the whole thing and erased it according to the instructions, so that would reformat it with FAT32 or whatever OS X requires right? Btw, I installed the AMD and Natit nvidia packages (I have an AMD cpu and nvidia card) Edited February 14, 2007 by Rapishorrid Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/42372-os-x-installation-questions/#findComment-303223 Share on other sites
Rapishorrid
Bump - this got buried fast.. I'm kind of stuck overall here to because if somebody does know what's wrong I can't go to reinstall on that HD without reformatting it from within windows. {censored}.
