Just getting started: Can I use legit OSX Tiger disk to install?

Hi everyone. After formatting and reformatting my PC that was having problems reinstalling XP and Vista, I accidentally stumbled upon this x86 stuff and I think it's great.

Currently I have one of those vmware torrents downloading, but it's looking like it's gonna take another few days to finish. I'm wondering if I can use an actual OS X Tiger install disk for the process somehow to speed up the process instead of waiting for the torrent. Someone mentioned the idea of "ppf patching" it, but I'm really clueless as to how that works..

Also while I'm at it, I'm attempting to install on a Sony Vaio FE550G notebook. It's a 1.66 Duo Core with 1gb RAM and 100gb HD. According to everything I read, I'm assuming things should run pretty smoothly on that, but is there any specific steps I might have to take down the line that could differ from someone on a different machine? Patches, etc. That might be getting a little ahead of myself at the moment, but I want to make sure I have a general understanding of what I'm doing. Thanks!
