10.4.8 - Can't get internet to work

I just installed JaS 10.4.8...problem is I can't get any internet working. Can someone tell me how to do this? I use a router which connects to a cable modem. When i go into Network Port Configurations in Network Setup, it has Built-In Ethernet, but I cannot select it because "I do not have the necessary hardware or I am not connected." What do I do?

BTW, I have a 3com 3C920

I have the same card as you. I replaced my IONetworkingFamily.kext file with this one. After I replace the 10.4.8 version with this 10.4.3 version I removed the cache files to allow them to rebuild on boot.

I used this kext file

I then removed

/System/Library/Extensions.mkext

and

/System/Library/Extensions.kextcache

Then rebooted system. Card worked perfect after that.
