dragonpool
I found that my macbook pro 17" C2D is slowed down by the hard disk. A lot of operations are hung waiting for finishing disk reading or writing work. I used XBench (Mac OSX) to check its speed and it surprised me that the score is very low. The Hard Disk score I got is only around 33. The memory and CPU scores are all over 120. The XBench tool can be downloaded free from http://www.xbench.com/ I used another disk benchmark tool in Windows XP and Vista running in Bootcamp. The read/write speed is only about 5MB/sec. I have a DELL laptop, which has an old Centrino Processor and 80GB 5400RPM disk, the read/write speed is about 9MB/sec. This windows tool is here: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Benchm...isk-Bench.shtml So could you please use the XBench or the Disk Bench to check your hard disk and report your result? U.C.
My 7200 RPM 160GB Sata has a write speed of approximately 20-30MBPS and a read speed of 50MBPS. I think there is something wrong with the HDD in ur iMac.
dragonpool
OK. I upgraded the standard hard drive (Hitachi 160GB 5400RPM) to a faster one (Seagate 100GB 7200RPM). The improvement is obvious, if I cannot say it's huge. It took almost 6 to 10 seconds to lauch Visual Studio 2005 in Vista before, but now it's only about two to four seconds. Also the old hard drive is very noisy, always clicking, clicking, clicking, like it's struggling to read or write data. This new one is quite and the very low noise is smooth. I have installed Vista, SQL Server 2005, Visual Studio 2005 in a run, and I could not feel obvious tempearture rise in the hard drive area. So this new hard drive seems to have no any heat issue. I'm glad I did it and I'm happy now that I have the MacBook Pro I wanted. Edited February 3, 2007 by dragonpool
erbic
I wouldn't say my HDD is that bad, but it drags my Vista Experience Index down to a 4.5. Otherwise, it'd be around 4.9.
