System freezes on IP address assignment

I guess the topic header says it all, or at least most of it. I've spent countless hours trying different installers and drivers for my on-board ethernet (Via Rhine II), and then bought a PCI ethernet card (Netgear GA311 - RTL8169 chipset) and had issues there as well. What I thought was an error with the card seems to be with when the computer gets an ip address. When it gets the address, the screen goes black, and other times the cursor changes to the pinwheel and never recovers.

I've tried changing the ethernet setup to DHCP with manual address, and completely manual settings, but no matter what address I give the computer, it freezes once the connection light goes to green. I use cable internet (Motorola Surfboard modem) through a Linksys WRT54G router, could that be causing the problem? Connecting straight to the modem instead of through the router got the same result. And I've tried connecting straight to the internet port on the router and giving the computer an address outside the DHCP range, and I can navigate through the router setup as long as I want, until it gets a real address that is.

Anyhow, I'm hoping some of the geniuses here might have an answer. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

Here's my setup if it helps:

ECS P4M800PRO-M motherboard (64-bit)

Intel Pentium D 930 3.0 Ghz

Nvidia GeForce FX5500 256 Mb

2.0 GB DDR2 RAM

320 GB SATA HD

USB mouse and keyboard

Pioneer DVR-111D DVD burner

Why not use the built in network with the Ktext?

P4M800 PRO-M Version 2.0 ECS Via sdasffa P4M800Pro / VT8237R

LAN works with pinxues Viarhine.kext. Sound and USB 1.0 work natively, but installing patch on Jas 10.4.8 for USB 2.0 seems to break it. Only tried PATA, have no idea about SATA. Had some issues with root device not found error, but -f will boot. Sound doesn't work in safe mode. Geforce 6200 works with titan.kext QE and CI supported. JaS 10.4.8 DVD for Intel SSE3 (reseed)

It works for me, but I still neet to figure out how to CHMOD the file

thanks guitardood for replying to me, I appreciate the support. But to answer your question, I have tried the onboard ethernet, that was what I did before trying out the Netgear card. Neither one works for me, although the Rhine does seem to act a bit more stable until the address gets assigned, but that's when it all goes haywire.

I do have pinxue's driver, and have tried it, but like I said, it dies at the same point. Maybe there's something else to my setup that's to blame and not the kext, that's entirely possible. Are you using a router with your setup, or more specifically, a router with both wired and wireless support? Just a thought on my part.

I had the same issue as you with USB support, and like you had to skip the 2.0 patch, and I also need to boot with -F to avoid "still waiting for root device" issues. I guess that's just par for the course with the P4M800PRO-M, regardless of whether you use PATA or SATA.

My GeForce FX5500 works with both Natit and Titan, but only Natit gives me QE/CI, and even then, it's slow as molasses. Like so slow, the system can barely function. But that's another issue. I'd rather tackle ethernet before anything else.

Thanks again for the help. Anyone else out there have any suggestions?

Well, good news! I am writing this from OSX on the ViaRhine.kext driver. Looks like it works after all! But, I'm still hoping I can get some help on a couple of things. First, I'm afraid to try anything advanced, because for example if I choose to auto update the system time, the network conneciton will freeze the computer. I am back on now after de-selecting it. Also, there is a general sluggishness to things, like a delay when typing or moving windows. Anyone else experienced this?

At any rate, this is definitely progress, and thanks guitardood for pointing me in the right direction!
