With the all the drivers out nowadays it has become very hard to sort all the video card options available so I am asking for suggestions from people. It has to cost $150 or less, be PCI Express 16x, be compatible with osx86 10.4.8, be a card that is decent and reliable. and be usable for now and the future. Thanks.

I picked up a GeForce 7600GT for $180 (with $30 rebate) from Circuit City a few weeks ago. So I'd recommend that card... works perfectly.

In fact, any PCIe 6- or 7-series GeForce is going to work just fine with the Natit driver. You can't go wrong with them.

I wouldn't recommend any ATI cards. I had one originally but apparently you need some Callisto driver and the page it's hosted on seems to be permanently down.

ATI PCI-E cards where the first on OSX that got a working QE and CI though initial thoughts to get this working was first predicted for NVida cards.

Recently Radeon X1600 PCI-E cards became the first to be fully working (no so-called mouse tearing, resolution changing etc...) on Pre-10.4.8 systems. On 10.4.8 it seems that X1800 cards seem to have the edge.

I don't known how the situation is today with 10.4.8 and NVidia. The only problem I so far discovered is that playing games is a no-go with my Radeon X1600 PCI-E and 10.4.8 ( the computer freezes after a short period sometimes showing gfx artifacts right before the freeze). For Desktop applications my system has worked very well.

So for my rig (P4, Intel 915 chipset, Radeon X1600pro) OSX 10.4.5 is still the best version.

Hope this helps,

Go for the midrange. You get all the features of the high end, you can pick out a card with quiet or even silent cooling since they aren't overclocked like the high end, games will outdate the high end just as quickly since Moore's Law...uh....Moore's Observation. The GeForce 6600 is still fast enough, and the 7600 is quite a bit faster and has transparency antialiasing, but they're both good cards. Don't go with the low end, since those are just rehashed versions of ancient cards (GeForce 2 + Overclock -> GeForce 4MX, +new shaders = GeForce 5200fx etc), often with features removed like dualmonitor, proper DVI connector, DVI, sufficient cooling, etc. Thats all hardware advice.

The GeForce 7300 GT was used in the Mac Pro. It may have better OS X support than other nvidia cards. Also GMA950 is quite compatible. For OS X compatibility advice, I'm looking into that here-
