skumix
Hi. I have quite a problem, and I hope someone is willing to help me out I had two partitions on my hard-drive. One for Windows XP Pro, and one for a Vista beta. Booting worked fine with the Vista boot menu. Vista expired, and I decided I wanted to try out OSX86.. So I formatted the Vista partition, and installed OSX86 (which works fine, except for ethernet, but i'm working on that ) The problem now is, that I can't boot into XP anymore! The Darwin bootloader works, and I can select the XP partition. Problem is, that the Vista bootloader still is active, and shows both Vista and XP (neither working, of course not vista )! Any way I can remove this Vista boot ##"¤%, without having to reinstall XP? (bear in mind that i can't make any changes to the XP partition from OSX because the windows partition isn't NTFS ) Any help is greatly appreciated Edited January 16, 2007 by skumix Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/38887-xp-boot-fails/ Share on other sites

Any way I can remove this Vista boot ##"¤%, without having to reinstall XP? (bear in mind that i can't make any changes to the XP partition from OSX because the windows partition isn't NTFS ) Any help is greatly appreciated first one backup your data first do this from win xp rescue console * C: FIXBMBR this should wipeout old boot loader if you can't boot to win do from win xp rescue console * C: CD .. * C: ATTRIB –H C:\boot.ini * C:ATTRIB –S C:\boot.ini * C:ATRIB –R C:\boot.ini * C: del boot.ini * C: BOOTCFG /Rebuild * C: CHKDSK /R /F * C: FIXBOOT * Now for the most important step of our process, the BOOTCFG /REBUILD command which searches for pre-existing installations of Windows XP and rebuilds sundry essential components of the Windows operating system, recompiles the BOOT.INI file and corrects a litany of common Windows errors. It is very important that you do one or both of the following two things: First, every Windows XP owner must use /FASTDETECT as an OS Load Option when the rebuild process is finalizing. Secondly, if you are the owner of a CPU featuring Intel's XD or AMD's NX buffer overflow protection, you must also use /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN as an OS Load Option. I will demonstrate both commands for the purpose of this guide, but do not set NOEXECUTE as a load option if you do not own one of these CPUs. For the "Enter Load Identifier" portion of this command, you should enter the name of the operating system you have installed. If, for example, you are using Windows XP Home, you could type "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" for the identifier. This gives the process some authenticity, if you're keen on being a perfectionist. if you can boot to anything use linux or some other program to set boot flag to windows or os x partytion in some live linux like ubuntu do form terminal cfdisk sorry but i don't remeber exacltly but it is very simple program set boot flag to your win partition if you do this you will be able to bot to windows (to boot os x form win xp boot loader search for chain0 trick on forum) or set boot flag to your os x partytion you will be able to boot to os x if you boot stright to os x hold F8 key at boot it will show you boot loader you can chose windows from it if these not work hmmmm... remember the first step i write you to do Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/38887-xp-boot-fails/#findComment-277240 Share on other sites
