krbonne Posted January 15, 2007 Share Posted January 15, 2007 Gegroet, The last couple of months, I have been playing around with all kind of distributions and *nix systems on my machine (one of them being openwarwin7.2.1) but also three different unix-systems based on debian using a non-linux kernel: debian GNU/kfreebsd (debian based on the freebsd kernel) debian GNU/hurd (debian based on the GNU hurd). (see http://www.debian.org/ports/#nonlinux for these two). nexenta: debian GNU/opensolaris (see http://gnusolaris.org). This was sofar the best worked out non-linux debian OS. So, I guess my question is pretty straighforward: Does anybody know of any distribution which works on combining debian, the GNU-tools and darwin or opendarwin (or only the XNU-kernel?) Opendarwin and gnu-darwin did go a good way into that direction, but that are distributions aimed at providing a darwin-like enviroment. Anybody any idea of the feasability or dificulty of trying to create a debian-like or debian-based distribution ontop of darwin, opendarwin of xnu? Cheerio! Kr. Bonne. (no, I don't know if it even works if you don't have OS X) I'm working on getting an environment set up on Apple Darwin 8.1 to get Fink installed, but during installation, it continually fails, complaining that Apple's GCC compiler (4.0.0) is too old to use, it also happens to look for an "Apple Computer, Inc" string in the GCC version, which puts self-built GCC out of the question. XNU it's a piece of {censored} because it's a microkernel. The only good microkernel is L4. Why not use L4/Debian?
