I'm mostly an AMD guy... but after numerous attempts to get OSX working on my main system (an Opteron 170 on a DFI LanParty NF4 Ultra D) have failed, I am thinking maybe I should build a dedicated system using proven components that work with OSX, not some that work for only the extremely fortunate...

Obviously, the best would be to buy an Apple box itself, but that is out of my price range.

So, what I'm considering is building an Intel Pentium D 805 system... about the cheapest dual core I could build, right? Supports SSE3 and the basic stuff..

Question is - what motherboard should I buy - keeping low cost in mind - that would be the most compatible with OSX and require the least amount of "tweaking" to get operational? I'm pretty open, though onboard video would be preferred if it works with OSX. Is DDR memory even a possibility, or would I be required to use DDR2?

Thanks!

You can buy an Asrock Conroe945-DVI (Full compatible with OSX 10.4.8), a Pentium D 805 processor. This motherboard is also comaptible with Dual Core processor. See specification of this moterboard and see here http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/HCL_10.4.8 to compatible and not compatible hardware for more information.

I feel your pain with that board. I just replaced my dead MSI board with the same DFI and it's been nothing but headaches. USB ports don't work unless you unplug/plugin. Unable to get SATA to work, even just to read my NTFS partitions like I had with my nForce3 board. Plus the major pain to get Natit to work with my GeForce 7600GT.
